Questions & Answers

Is this a direct replacement for the SkySync GPS algorithm that pulls GPS information from your smartphone to align the telescope?

Yes, but you still need to align it with three stars and then the phone will do the rest.

Are you using the latest model skyportal that can be updated to the latest firmware?

A clear indication of generation three is the absence of a paper clip hole on the left side where you might hit the reset button with a paperclip. It is the A reset is not available for 3 either. There is a new model number for this computer. A much more robust wireless network. Use the new one only. If it isn't the new one, do not The item should be returned.

Is it possible to use this as a replacement for Starsense Autoalign? Would it be worth it to make ?

In this case, the scope does not align, but instead the mount is connected via a wifi connector, which means you can align your scope manually when using the Sky Portal app. By connecting Starsence to a wifi network and the Skyportal app via Starsence, the app will automatically recognize and connect to Starsence. The setup I use works well for me, and I've used it for quite a while.

Which of the three generations of this module is this? Is this Generation 1, ?

There is now a third generation SkyPortal WiFi Module on the market. Please accept my sincere condolences at Celestron, Garrett

Your hand controller is not to be thrown away
3/5

As part of my Celestron NexStar SLT, I use this device. review has been difficult to write. I have a number of complaints about the device, such as my iPad 2 losing connection with the WiFi signal and having to reconnect. This is a pain since I can't access the internet without leaving the Skyportal app first. It's also very difficult to use the direction controllers. In the future, I strongly recommend using the arrow buttons on the hand controller to center at the eyepiece and only using Skyportal to navigate when you're looking at the screen, or at the very least when you're looking at it. Sky Safari's telescope functionality is really more of a feature bolted on to the side than it is an integral part, and it makes the whole experience very clunky. The app has a lot of other issues that are annoying. I must look in the Settings menu if I wish to click on a specific RA or Dec. There is nothing more to be said about this. In other words, setups and settings are better suited to this section. It would be easy for me to make a list of similar annoyances, but I am not interested in taking Is it possible that the Henry Draper and SAO catalogues (among others) are not included in the device? Also, why aren't all the popular double star catalogues (like Burnham, Struve, Herschel, etc. ) included? Is that because the catalogues for dark nebulae made by Lynde and Barnard are not In addition to the RA and Dec for other catalogues, I don't need write-ups on everything.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to things that bother me about the During the course of my nights with it, I have never found a good reason to curse it or the I may return it, but I don't intend to. In spite of my objections, I find it to be useful enough for me to keep it. It's disappointing to see it isn't better, but I can't do anything but feel disappointed. It's too bad.

The consistency is very poor
3/5

There are many times when it drops the connection. There are claims that you can align your scope with it. It may just be that I have a defective unit, Having the scope move wirelessly is nice, but it seems to follow its own path. A lot of the software on an iPad It will be convenient in the beginning, but I will not fully commit until it is applied. It is evident that the technology is not available. In the event that the screw fails to unscrew, this is a return. There is only a limited amount of time left on this piece.

The 114LCM works well with this product
5/5

My 114LCM is connected to this device. I found it a little tricky to set up (especially to the wifi access point), but after I got it set up it worked perfectly. You can use the sky portal app to adjust the scope, align, and more. It is much easier and more fun to use the apps graphical interface to navigate the scope as opposed to When you have the skyportal connected, you can still use the hand control to center objects. As soon as I attempted to update my hand controller via wifi, it bricked the device with a bootloader error. When I called Celestron, they had me update with a USB cable, and everything worked out fine. It was recommended not to use Wi-Fi for updating They said they preferred using the cable to Wi-Fi.

The documentation for this product is horrible
3/5

The product itself is very good. It has been a few weeks since I started experimenting with this. 1) You do not need this for calibration If you want to do it manually, you can do so. Nevertheless, this accessory, combining with two other accessories, in theory makes it easier than ever before. These are the three things you will need Skysense camera (for star recognition)

2) Skysense GPS (for lat/long positioning)
3) Skyportal Wifi (for tracking time and location). links it up so you can control the telescope with your smartphone or computer, which is a much better experience than using a Using a wireless connection is also great because you can update the software, which is really, really hard to do via a wired connection. There is a difference between night and day. 1) No matter how cold it is, it is always awesome to be able to stand inside and search the sky, even on the coldest nights. Among the things I did not like were 1) The documentation is poor. It turns out that following the instructions does not work and you will need to reach out to celstron customer support (they are awesome). The only problem is they are only open during the day, so you lose a night to them. When I need it, I have to fight to get it to connect. I find it easier to use it with my phone. It is almost impossible to connect it to your home wifi.
