The hero 7 black comes with one, but I needed another so that I could stick an nd filter on it for when I'm flying with it on my drone in direct sunlight. Sure enough, I hit some power lines (thought I was far above them) (my spotter knew I wasn't and tried to warn me, but I didn't listen). ) and the gopro fell easily from a hundred feet or so onto the rocky desert of the Las Vegas mountains, and all that happened was the nd filter popped off and the actual protective lens was scratched but not cracked, while the camera lens was fine.
I bought this to replace my first lens, which was smashed when I fell off my tractor (suction cup mount) and both the lens cover and the FULL LENS were smashed. The inner lens CAN be replaced; a photo repair shop sells used ones for $30. It's a PAIN to swap out because you risk breaking it if you try to screw it in all the way (which is a different story). br>br>Anyway, changing out these lens "covers" is a major pain! It's much easier to put on than it is to take off the old one. As a result, the rating is lower. br>br>BUT, this is where the big money is. br> & It's not even close to being long-lasting! br>br>In fact, I was debating whether it was even GLASS! br>br>I placed it near a piece of equipment I was working on and used a cut-off saw to remove bolts. off-wheel (this is nothing new; I used to do it all the time with my Sony). I was maybe 18" away (again, nothing out of the ordinary), but when I picked it up, the lens looked like swiss cheese, and there were chunks of metal STUCK in the glass! br>br>Keep in mind that it was only in the glass and not on the plastic case. I tried everything I could think of on it, including buffing compound, but it didn't work. The camera lens had been damaged. br>br>Therefore, three stars. That was not something it should have done. As a result, I'm going to order ANOTHER lens cover. But this time, it's also a cover for my cover!.
I've owned nearly every GoPro model available. These Hero7 lens covers are the only ones with which I've ever had issues. They are prone to cracking and shattering. Fortunately, it's a relatively inexpensive repair, but what has changed? I mount to the front windshield of a motorcycle, so I realize it'll get kicked up at it, but I've never had an issue in the past. Maybe the next version will be stronger.
I assumed that by spending a little more on the GoPro brand, I would be getting a better product, but when I opened the packaging, the lens was covered in dust (as seen in the photo) and what appeared to be paper shreds? Or maybe a sliver of a sticker? It took me at least 30 minutes to get all of it out with a microfiber cloth. I had to cram the microfiber all the way into the corner of the lens in order to avoid breaking it. I shouldn't have had to do any of it in the first place. I'm hoping it's just my problem. I'm hoping that if you order this, you won't have the same problem.
It's nice to see GoPro thought to make one specifically for the Hero 7, especially since it's a different color than the old lens protector that came with the Hero 5 and 6. If you have a Hero 5 or 6, the other part number (AACOV-) is what you'll need. If color matching is a concern, dial (001). There's not much to say about this except that it's a replacement that works. I left mine on after putting the camera in the dive housing and misplaced it; I'm thinking about getting another one in case I lose or break this one. Nothing is worse than being without your camera for a few days, and I'm guessing these won't be available in many stores, so having an extra on hand is always a good idea. Thankfully, if you have a Hero 5 or 6 and are in a pinch, you can borrow the lens cover from those and it will work with a 7 - The color simply does not match, which isn't a major issue for most people.
I have a Hero 5, and this cover fits the 5/6/7 models. The only difference I noticed is that the lens housing is black. It was grey on the fifth floor. This isn't a problem at all. I use them on my dirt bike helmet-mounted Hero 5, and I bought two this time because the previous replacement cracked while recording one of many crashes! br>It's too bad there isn't a way to replace just the glass, but then it wouldn't be waterproof, would it?.
My GoPro 7's lens had scratched and needed to be replaced. Scratches on a microscopic scale The lens on my camera had to be replaced. This is a direct replacement for the original. The original lens had to be removed with some effort. It's as simple as twisting the lens out of the way. This lens twisted back on easily, and I now have a lens that is scratch-free. I installed a hardened glass protective cover to prevent future scratches.
This was purchased for a Hero 6 Black - Although the color is different from that of the 6, who cares? It's a perfect fit, and it's less expensive than the Amazon equivalent for the 6. There's no need to be concerned, and you've received excellent marks.
