Questions & Answers

Will this bluetooth dongle be required for my Victron solar charger to work? What am I going to miss out on if I don't have this dongle?

No, the dongle is not required. The dongle allows you to monitor and control the unit from your smartphone or another bluetooth device, or from the unit's control panel.

How much electricity does this consume?

Bluetooth consumes a surprisingly small amount of energy. When not in use (no PV input), a MPPT 75/15 controller consumes about 20 milliamperes (mA), 21 milliamperes (mA) when the dongle is connected, and 22 milliamperes (mA) when scrolling through data. It's unclear how much of the last mA is accounted for by the dongle and how much is accounted for by the controller. As a result, plan on about 25mAH per day, or less than one. Each month, you will receive 0 AH.

I'm assuming that if I use this blue tooth device, I won't be able to use the round monitor that came with the bmv- 702?

The BMS-based display BMS-700 or 700 Yes, you can use both independently because 702 is always available and the dongle is an add-on to that. This dongle is also compatible with Victron MPPT controllers that have either a wired display (MPPT Control) or a Bluetooth connection, but not both.

Is it possible to change the battery voltage charging parameters for different types of batteries using this (in conjunction with a victron mppt controller)?

Yes, it is possible.

Although it provides useful connectivity, it suffers from a few design flaws
4/5

With a Victron 75/15 BlueSolar MPPT charge controller, I'm using it in our camper.   This is a great system for the most part, but there are a few design flaws that cost this item 1- star: 1) The Bluetooth module and the charge controller are connected via a small multi-pin connector. pin flat connector with a weak locking mechanism.   I've accidentally knocked it out a couple of times by simply applying tension to the cable.   It'd be great if there was a locking connector here. Re- If you can't see the connector on the bottom of the controller (for example, if the controller is mounted low near the battery, as per the instructions), it'll be difficult to connect it to the controller. )   br>br>2) In general, blinking lights should only be used for things that require your immediate attention.   The Bluetooth module makes a bright-colored blinking light. When you're not connected to the internet via Bluetooth, you'll see a blue LED. (This is the expected behavior, as the VictronConnect app disconnects whenever you open another app or turn off the screen. )   I wanted to put this module somewhere visible (so I could diagnose problems quickly), but the blinking LED is distracting at night in our camper, so I have two options: bury the module inside a cabinet where it won't be seen, or cover the LED with tape. In either case, the whole "at a glance" convenience is nerfed.

Setting up and maintaining a working system is extremely difficult
3/5

It took a lot of effort to get this to work. This unit, as well as its app, require a great deal of improvement! They say you shouldn't connect to your device until you're in the app, which is absurd! Why can't they make it work like Bluetooth speakers and connect without a hitch? br>At first, I tried it with a Galaxy Note 8, but the app kept telling me it couldn't communicate with the device; then I tried it with a Moto G5, which was able to connect but kept telling me the password of 000000 was incorrect when I tried to sign in. Because the manual stated that the password could be changed, I did so to see if it was set to a random number. They say you can reset it by pressing the button for 5 seconds until the LEDs blink twice, but with the LEDs blinking all the time, that's impossible. I did eventually get it to accept the password and start working, but I'm not sure how. Another issue is that if you come back later and try to connect again after it has connected and you have logged in, it does not do so instantly like a speaker would, but instead takes a long time to reconnect and start working again. More issues! br> I wanted to see if the solar panels were charging today because it was cloudy, so I opened the Victron app, which promptly crashed and removed its icon from the screen! br>I turned off the power, rebooted everything, and tried again; it connects via Bluetooth, but then says it needs to update the firmware to version 2. 15 to 2. It goes a little way to 4% and then gets an error saying Update Failed!
It goes a little way to 4% and then gets an error saying Update Failed! Is there any way to fix this now that Bluetooth isn't working?.

The Smart Shunt has a problem, and this solves it
3/5

Because the Victor Smart Shunt's bluetooth range is so limited (literally less than 5 feet with no obstructions), I decided to get this. This plugs in and allows for a connection of up to 50 feet. With no obstacles in the way, the distance is 60 feet. I can easily connect from inside the RV as well, allowing me to monitor the battery charge level and solar panel output for the first time. I shouldn't have had to buy it, but it does help with range. The only issue I've had is that it has failed to connect on a couple of occasions, and the module appeared to be stuck thinking it was connected to my phone, preventing a connection. To reset it, I had to unplug it from the smart shunt, but after that, everything was fine.

It could be a lot better
3/5

I'm not sure why I needed this; it does the same thing as the Solar Charger Controller, with no added Bluetooth range. Why is there a special plug on the side of the Solar Charger for this device? It is absolutely unnecessary and a waste of money! Why can't the Solar Charger, in addition to all the other information, tell you what's in your RV battery pack via Bluetooth? Oh, but then they wouldn't be able to sell you anything else. Increase your earnings. The equipment is fine, but I'm not a fan of all the extras that quickly add up to $10,000 or more. 15000 !.

So far, everything has gone well
3/5

It has the potential to grow in value with more use. I'm really looking forward to it. I'm going to hold off on giving this 5 stars until I've given it more time because it's ridiculously overpriced for a "bluetooth dongle. " I understand it has firmware and software for interfacing, but if there was any competition, it would not be so expensive. So far, the display hasn't been too distracting. Other mppt controllers and their "meters" provided much more information. The software installed on my Galaxy A6 tablet, but it refused to connect via Bluetooth. Fortunately, it works well with my LG Volt phone. I bought this because of the ability to change the parameters. So, let's see what happens. RTFM issues contributed to some of my difficulties: "Gee, the manual even SAYS to do xyz!" " I'm the one who has to take responsibility for that. Victron is not one of them. br>br>After I've used it for a while, I'll update this. It's possible that I'll fall in love with it. Victron has a lot of good press, so I'm expecting a lot from it.

Will not be compatible with HQST
5/5

It does not work with the HQST MPPT, which has the same connector, in case anyone was curious. I was aware that it wasn't supposed to work, but I decided to take a chance and see if I could make it work. I was working under the assumption that it simply translated serial data, and I thought I might be able to make it work, but it could be more complicated. I even rewired it to match the HQST wiring (power and ground were switched), but I didn't try swapping the data lines because I didn't think it would make a difference. br>br>When I plug it in, the HQST MPPT appears to shut down completely (or something is shorted). In any case, I figured I'd pass along this information. br>br>It appears to be of good quality and well constructed, but I haven't used it.
