I think it will work most likely. (I am a black woman with coarse hair) and it works just fine for me. As well as getting very hot, it gets very humid. The heat can be controlled, but it cannot be changed. It may help if you read this.

The Yellow Bird I bought from another retailer four years ago is still working fine. The device worked very well up until it broke in half in the middle of usage.
