It is brown in color and looks like clay or mud. There's a wonderful earthy smell to it, though. For shampoo, it is like using a puddle of mud from a peat bog. The cleanser isn't super soapy, but it does coat my hair just fine and rinsing it clean is easy. This is my favorite.
