When the shop does not even have the right tools to do a job, I love having them on hand.
As the owner of a fleet of 140 class 7 vehicles, I change out bearing cups on six axles a month on average. As far as I know, the OTC 7180 is the very best tool for the job at hand. I have modified mine to remove the cups so that hubs are not deformed by glancing blows caused by hammered straight drifts. One problem I have with this tool is that the roll pins that secure the jaws tend to wear out fairly My problem has been solved since I replaced the grade 8 bolts with grade 8 bolts. With the OTC tool, you will find a complete replacement parts list and contact information. The best part is that it is made in the United States. Thank you, and God bless you.
I can't get it from any local supplier because they are all out of stock. In addition, these suppliers are looking for 300-400 This tool cost me 200 bucks on Amazon, which I bought for 240 bucks. My wife and I have used this tool for years, and it works exactly as expected. If you find yourself replacing two axles or more of bearing cups on the same shift, it is worth every penny. You'll be very glad when your hands feel great the next.
This is a really useful.
It does the job well.
The third time I installed cups, I did it on an OS X system. An 8 inch to a 4 inch shoe. The range is from 5 to 7 inches. That claim has not been made by any other product I found. After typing several of them, the OTC 7180 made me a bearing cup installer. It's hard to face a dead person I didn't need to use the blow hammer, but it worked nicely. This is not a professional service it is just someone who wants to be able to do something like this to stay in business.
Half the time it took to install a race was saved with this tool. I used it to remove races on some hubs. I paid for it on the first job, at least.
I have purchased numerous of these for customers and our shop. This takes the guess work out of installing bearing cups.
