The answer came in the form of the goliath press. With this press and a 1/2 electric impact wrench, I was able to swap BJ in no time.
Dana 60 solid axle with a 7L 4x4. This is a very large clamp. I abused it to the point where I had a rusted-out rusted-out rusted out rusted out rusted out out of the ball joints Along with a 22mm deep socket for pressing out the top ball joints, I used the Astro universal extension kit, which had everything I needed (you just have to get creative and think mechanically about what works best). It took everything I could throw at it, from my 20v DeWalt impact wrench to a small sledgehammer. I did make a point of using PB on the threads on a regular basis. It's a little unwieldy at times, but that's difficult to avoid with such a large device; you'd probably bend the knuckle's ears before breaking it! Because you can't reach the top with the impact, it's a good idea to have a sturdy 1/2" breaker bar, cheater bar, and socket wrench. The new Moogs went right in after cleaning out the rust with a small wire wheel and using PB on the knuckle. I'll be doing some u-turns with it. br>br> I believe it will make that job a LOT easier than it was previously. When I'm finished, I'll let you know how the press treated them.
I haven't had a chance to use the press yet, but once I do, I'll update the review. br>br>When the press arrived, the forcing screw plug and ball bearing in the screw cavity were completely rusted. These parts were apparently assembled without any lubricant or rust inhibitor, and they completely rusted together during transport from China. It was so bad that I had to use a vise and channel locks to get the plug to turn back and forth enough for the rust to break free and get it out. It had to be replaced because it was so crusty that it ripped the o'ring on the way out. br>br>It took a lot of scraping, soaking, and repeating to get the ball bearing to break free so it could be removed. After sanding all of the parts to remove the rust and applying some lubricant, everything now moves freely as it should. Unfortunately, the rust has caused the parts to become pitted. br>br>Be sure to inspect everything when you receive it.
On both front tension strut arms of the 3-wheeler, I replaced bushings. BMW-series Installing new Lemforder bushings on an E90. These bushings are nearly the same size as the subframe bushings, but they are much larger. Overall, it saved me a lot of money because I didn't have to buy new BMW arms, which are quite expensive, and the older bushings were blown and developed large cracks/fizzures around the perimeter, causing the front suspension to be noisy and vibrate. The tool is large and cumbersome, but it does the job.
On a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500, I replaced the ball joints. This, combined with the other master set of adapters and cups, just made it over the studs in time for removal and installation. However, doing them without it would have been extremely difficult. It's well-made. A large ratchet and a cheater bar were used. I couldn't have removed the ball joints without it, and I couldn't have done it without it. It has exceeded my expectations.
Because this press is much larger than the standard size, I am now able to use all of my adapters properly. You guys from Taco and 4Runner are well aware of what I'm referring to.
On my 2005 Ram 2500, I used it to press out the ball joints. It did what it was supposed to do.
This is a typical Amazon product: it's a shambles.
