Questions & Answers

On a sunny day, how many amps are used to charge the battery while it is in use?

I bought this system to use as a "test bed" before purchasing my main dual-core system. Two 250W, 24V 8A panels are used in the axis 2 panel system. It's a monocrystilline 100w panel rated at 5 amps at 12 volts, according to the manufacturer. On good days, I see 1314 volts at 4 amps, and on bad days, I've seen 5 amps (though 4A is more realistic). I used it to charge a 73AH West Marine Deep Cycle Gel battery (the panel came with a 30A PWM charge controller) as a test item. It worked perfectly and charged the battery in a matter of hours (I used an amp meter and a volt meter to monitor the output). I was previously using two 45W amorphous panels (Harbor Freight) that took up to four days to complete what this single panel can complete in four hours. Buy with confidence.

In my van (vandweller), I'm looking for a solar option to charge laptops and other small electronics. Is this a feasible option? or do you require a multiplier of two?

As long as you have enough batteries to connect it to, this kit will work far beyond that. It can charge your van battery and power 12 volt appliances from your cigarette lighter, or it can power 120 volt appliances with an inverter that can handle the wattage you need. When using a low-cost inverter, be cautious of sensitive electronics. A sine wave inverter could be required. A good group of deep cycle batteries comes highly recommended by me. You can run more if you have more batteries. You can find a lot of answers on YouTube. I sincerely hope that I was of assistance.

Is it possible to upgrade to a more advanced controller for this kit?

I doubt the respondent s perception that his charge controller couldn't handle a 10% drop in his batteries. For the past three years, I've had this setup on my boat, and it's worked flawlessly. The charge controller is made to work with three different types of batteries:br> Gel, AGM, and flooded are all options. It's possible that he chose the wrong type of battery for his controller. It's just a simple up/down on the controller, but if you don't match your choice to your batteries, the batteries will be destroyed.

What are the panel's dimensions?

The current panel dimensions that Renogy sells with these kits have not been updated. The Compact panels, which are 42 inches wide, are now included with all of these kits. The dimensions are 4L x 20W x 1 3/8 Thick. Amazon doesn't even have the larger 47" panels.

In the Rockies, boondocking at 7500 feet
5/5

At 7500 feet in Colorado's Rockies, we're having a weekend "Get Away. " On our 5 acres, we're boondocking with a 26-foot trailer. Thanks to this kit, we are now 12 volt solar off the grid. We mounted the panel flat at first, but after some testing, we purchased a tilt mount and increased our power. Snow and rain will also be able to slide off the roof. It's critical! br> Currently, two 75 amp hour deep cell batteries are being charged in parallel, and a second panel has been added. After a typical day and night of use, Led lights, furnace or swamp cooler depending on the season, fan, stereo, water pump, and so on. By mid-afternoon, the batteries have completely charged. br>br>This summer, we'll add a third panel and a third battery, followed by a fourth and fourth battery the following spring. We could add an inverter at that point, but we're fine with 12 volts right now. This emphasizes one of the kit's most appealing features: its ability to be expanded. You are not required to purchase everything at once. One panel was sufficient for a weekend, two panels provided nearly limitless power, and three panels provided additional power. The controller is capable of controlling four panels at the same time. br>br>These panels have been with us for a year and we couldn't be happier. In the afternoons, I usually check on the controller to see how it's doing, but otherwise, the kit is self-contained. This kit, as well as anything else from Renogy, comes highly recommended. The tilt mounts, like the panels, are well-made and dependable. If you want to solar charge an RV or cabin, this is where you should start, in my opinion. When we first got this kit, I was a complete novice when it came to solar, but now I'm a pro. Renogy's videos and instructions are excellent, as is their customer service. Our initial controller proved to be a dud. I contacted them and informed them of the situation. We were able to get a replacement controller the next day. The customer service representative also followed up via email to ensure that everything was in working order. He's a great guy who knows a lot about a lot of things. br>br>Last weekend, my wife went up on the roof and adjusted the angle of the solar panels for the summer, which was all the maintenance it needed. Those tilt mounts are fantastic as well!.

My solar panel on top of my RV was in jeopardy, and I was afraid it would be destroyed
5/5

This is my initial assessment. EVER. This was purchased for my RV about a year and a half ago. On July 29, 2016, we were hit by a severe hailstorm that shattered windows in cars and homes. My solar panel on top of my RV was in jeopardy, and I was afraid it would be destroyed. Roof vents on both sides were obliterated. The cover of the AC has been ruined. The TV antenna has been demolished. There isn't a scratch on the solar panel. This is an excellent product.

I was blown away
5/5

Last weekend, I had the kit installed on the roof of my 34-foot fifth-wheel trailer. Because of the distance between the controller and the panel, I purchased separate 8 gauge wire to limit any voltage drop, especially if the system is expanded in the future. The 8 gauge wire fit perfectly in the Wanderer controller, and it could have taken 6 gauge wire if I had preferred. When everything was connected, it started charging right away and was float charging the batteries at 13 volts. 6V. Just to be safe, I installed a 30 amp circuit breaker near the battery. Since the system was installed, I've been able to keep two 6 volt batteries charged. Because the screws provided appeared to be more like self-drilling metal screws, I used lag wood screws to attach it to the rubber roof. I drilled pilot holes, then used Dicor self-leveling roof sealant to screw everything in place, then used the sealant to cover the lag screws. I was so taken aback that I intend to add a second panel as soon as possible. It's a fantastic system that's also very simple to set up.

So far, everything has been running smoothly
5/5

This kit was purchased for a teardrop trailer I was building, as I needed something to charge a battery that would power LED reading lights, an LED dome light, and LED porch lights (on rare occasions). I don't leave them on), as well as a few 12 volt sockets (cigarette lighter type) that I could use to charge my phone, iPad, and Kindle, as well as power my portable DVD player - either to charge the player's battery or to keep it running when the battery runs out. br>br>Even though I knew very little about solar installation, I was enthusiastic and willing to give it a shot. br>br>On the roof of my teardrop, I mounted the panel flat. Would it be able to generate enough power even if it wasn't pointing at the sun? Read on. br>br>I installed the included charge controller on the trailer's interior wall, which required a 2 foot cable run. At Batteries Plus in my neighborhood, I purchased a deep charge battery. I constructed a battery box (complete with vents) and mounted it to the trailer tongue. From the controller to the battery, there was about 6 feet of wire. Then I went back to the battery and ran a plus and minus - The positive was routed to a fuse block beneath the controller on the wall; The negative was transferred to a "ground panel" that was made from scratch - I needed a bus where I could connect all of the negative leads. br>br>The controller has lights to help you keep track of how it's working. The battery is being charged, as indicated by a flashing green light. I was relieved to learn that it begins flashing shortly after the sun rises and continues to do so until the sun sets. When the sun was about to set and the sky was overcast, it kept flashing. Despite the fact that it wasn't angled toward the sun, it seemed to provide plenty of power. br>br>Because it's permanently mounted on top of the trailer, the battery was being charged as I drove from one campground to the next. If it were the type of application where it was stored between campsites and then pulled out to face the sun, I believe I would use less power. So far, I'm pleased with my decision to permanently mount it to the top of the cabinet. br>br>I purchased a volt meter, which I intend to connect to the system via an on-off switch. I've turned off the switch so that I can keep an eye on the situation. My trailer, on the other hand, isn't finished yet. This is one of the last details I'm working on. That is to say, I have no idea what is going on. I like the flashing lights, but I'd rather have numbers. br>br>This review should be taken with a grain of salt, as I am not an electrical engineer. I'll have to do more research into how to measure effectiveness, output, and other factors, and I'm also wondering if my power requirements are so low that this panel is unnecessary. LED lights are extremely energy-efficient! However, I thought the kit's price was very reasonable, and it has so far delivered exactly what I had hoped for. br>br>Perhaps I'll be able to add more detail to this review once I've gained more experience and have monitored it more scientifically. I hope this has been of some assistance.
