A bunk bed for RV is designed for this application. Steps on the ladder are angled so they are level when the ladder is at an angle. Check with this company, they sell different models of ladders. You would be able to put the ladder straight up and down, but the steps would be angled funny, making it awkward. A good ladder with top quality construction, which I use for our daughter's bunk bed and hefty enough for our cabin furniture.

Our young children couldn't climb up to the top bunk in the trailer since there was no ladder. I like how well designed this ladder is, but if you want to cut it down to fit, you have to take off the rubber feet and cut from the bottom up.
