This is a critique of the following book: Duo of A/C Ducted Air Grilles for RVs Therm Air Conditioner Grille Replacement for Dometic RV A/Cbr>Therm Air Conditioner Grille Replacement for Dometic RV A/Cbr>This return air replacement grille measures 14. 17 x 7. 87 x 0. It's 35 inches long and fits on top of the a/c ceiling cover. It has a reusable foam filter that can be washed. One of the clips securing this grille in place had broken off when I bought the RV (see photo above). It is simple to set up. I am a 67-year-old woman who completed the project on my own. While installation is simple, I have a hard time removing it to clean the grille or wash or replace the foam filter. I don't want to break the clips, which are made of hard plastic. I tried pushing the clip tab up from the back at first, but it didn't work. I now pull the clip body forward and down with pliers from the front, releasing pressure on the tab and allowing it to lift up. The foam filters are easy to clean, then I roll them in a towel to absorb any excess water before leaving them outside to dry for a few minutes. Despite the fact that the grille can be removed with only one clip, I gave it a 4 out of 5 star rating for Durability because removing it requires extreme caution to avoid breaking one. This grill is polar white, whereas your original grill was most likely ivory. Simply unscrew the old piece, which is held in place by four Phillips screws, two of which are visible when the grill is removed and two of which are hidden beneath plugs in the back of the unit. Remove the screws by pulling them out with the tip of a small screwdriver. Remove the assembly and clean it thoroughly with soap and water to remove any dust or dirt (which you will find). Use a lint-free cloth to clean it. Rustoleum enamel or a good quality plastic spray paint work well. Spray it down until it's completely covered, starting with light coats. Make sure the movable louvers don't get too much paint. Check your louvers to see if they move after the paint has dried and cured (a couple of hours in the sun). WHALAAA! a lovely white or (your choice of color).
It has the same fit and appearance as the original. The color isn't quite right. At first glance, there isn't enough to notice. This one is made of the same low-cost plastic as the original. I deducted one star because of the color; otherwise, I would have received exactly what I expected.
This was near perfect for the first 90 days, and if I had reviewed it a week ago, I would have easily given it 5 stars. br>br>I took it apart and put it back together several times (changing filters, servicing the A/C control box, cleaning the evaporator coils, and so on) with no issues. Until today, when I took it out to change the filter, and SNAP. It was completely split in half, from side to side. On this one, it appears that there is a flaw in the materials or manufacturing process. br>br>I'm hesitant to order a replacement because at this rate, I'd be spending $50 per year on quarterly replacements for a part that should last several years or more. I'm thinking of trying a different supplier and seeing how things go.
On our RV A, we used this as a replacement. The original's tabs had broken off, and the filter was falling apart, so this is a good replacement. It appears to be sturdier and has a bit of flex and give to it that the old one lacked, so it doesn't feel fragile or as if it will break just by removing it. It's a tad bigger than it needs to be. It's not much, but it's enough to notice that the fit isn't quite right; a smidge of material protrudes. I'm still satisfied with my purchase and the cost!.
br>br>This one is a tad too long, with a slight bow in the grill. But not to the point of bothering me. It's a lot better than having to replace the entire assembly.
Let's be honest, this OEM part is flimsy and prone to breaking. When I needed a replacement, I chose this one primarily because of the picture and the price; it came in a thin, clear bag with a filter. Sure, it's not as tough as the OEM, but then again, neither is the OEM. This is an item that I would buy again.
