I'm not sure what the hole's exact size is. Regardless, I purchased two of those tow hooks, which fit perfectly in the front and back threads of my 2010 Subaru Outback. I used D Rings to fill the holes permanently - With a 7/8" pin, it measures 3/4".
3/4" with a 7/8" pin, without a doubt.
2017 is the year of my Outback. It really works.

Before you go out and buy a new tire, look in your trunk next to your old one. In the spare tire compartment of most Subarus, there is a tow hook. Because I didn't check, I now have an extra. I did install a tow hook ring, and I really like how it looks. Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) products that are strong enough to pull you out of a ditch without causing damage to your vehicle. To install, simply remove the tow hook door cover, line it up, and screw it in place.
On the front and rear of my 2019 Outback, I painted it black, rubberized it, and mounted a solid shackle to it. Definitely a good buy, as well as a very solid, seriously strong tow hook.
Using the back tow hook, I was able to pull out a 2wd. This is a testament to their durability. They work great after I painted them black and added 3/4" shackles with shackle isolators (large conical ones made for jeep bumpers).
Our Subi's tow hook has a smaller hole than the OEM one. Although it does not exactly match the one that came with our 2017 Crosstrek, it threads perfectly in the front and back bumpers beneath the removable plug. The tow hook accomplishes its goal perfectly.
An Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV was once my vehicle of choice. On a cold winter night, I collided with Ice and slid into a ditch. I couldn't get out on my own, but a good Samaritan in a jeep came to my rescue, wrapping a cable around the axle and pulling me out. There had to be a better way, so when I read in the January Subaru magazine that having a tow hook, shackles, and tow strap is a must, I remembered my previous experience and put together my rescue kit. I don't want to use this product, so I'm content to admire its quality.
My '11 Outback is perfect for it. I wanted to be able to have a tow hook on both the front and back in case I got stuck (I enjoy hiking trails).
This is standard on a lot of stock cars. I'm not sure if this will work in the event of a tow, and I'm hoping I won't have to find out. That said, it's a solid product, and my primary motivation for purchasing it was to add some padding to the back of the vehicle in the event of a rear-end collision. ended ;.
My Subaru Outback Touring 2021 is a perfect fit. We keep our tow hooks in all year because we live in a snowy area of northern Minnesota. For a permanent installation, we drilled out the tow hook cover. This Amazon listing has photos of the factory hook on the front bumper with our shackle and the rear bumper with the tow hook.
