The most difficult part of the installation was removing the Toyota undercarriage fasteners, which I accomplished with the help of a plastic crowbar I bought in a set of plastic body and dash tools and a flat screw driver after some trial and error. We bought the hitch to allow a two-bike carrier on our prius, so it's a good idea to buy a few extra before you start. It's a perfect solution. We purchased an Allen bike carrier with a lockable knob that tightens a receiver wedge. There is no wobble with the combination of a sturdy hitch and a wedge-tightened Allen carrier - as reported in a number of the carrier's ratings. I'm extremely happy.
Following the video instructions on the website, this hitch was relatively simple to install; however, it took me much longer than indicated, owing to the fact that I did the work on the ground with a jack and stands, whereas the video installation used a vehicle lift. Two people are clearly required to lift the hitch into place with the bumper reinforcement in the video, not only because of the weight, but also because installing both at once is bulky and awkward getting the bolts started. It's easy to damage some of the trim and fasteners if you don't take precautions. If you're still uneasy after watching the video, professional installation is almost certainly worth the money. The Curt wiring kit was also made easier by watching the video provided, but without a vehicle lift, it took much longer than indicated.
This hitch installed perfectly on my 2020 Prius Prime and is barely visible beneath the rear bumper. It's about 10 1/2" off the ground, so it's got plenty of room. The receiver sits about 3 1/2" back from the edge of the bumper, so you might need a draw bar extension. The installation instructions are clear, and there are YouTube videos available on the internet that I recommend watching. While starting a few bolts, I used a wide ATV jack to hold the hitch and bumper in place. I used twine to tie the hitch and bumper together in two places so that they could be hoisted together. There are eight 8mm (1/4") bolts in total. This is held to the frame by a )diameter, which makes it fairly stable. The bolts will require 12mm and 13mm sockets, as well as the same mm combination wrenches. The rest of the tools are standard flat and Phillips screwdrivers, a utility knife and/or strong scissors, and possibly needle nose pliers to help pry the 14 push pins out of the underbody shields. To give myself more room to work under the car, I raised the rear of the car about 4" on leveling pads. This will be used to attach a bike carrier to my vehicle.
Curt specifies this for the 2021 Prius Prime. I installed it (80%) on my 2021 Prius Prime XLE. To get the receiver in place, I had to deform the underside of the facia upward about 1" and the receiver's back end was about 3" forward of the rear face. This makes it difficult to reach, and attachments may be pressed against the facia as a result. Instead of dealing with these flaws, I removed the hitch and returned it.
I installed this hitch on a 2020 Toyota Prius Prime, which took a lot longer than it should have because I was working with a flashlight in 20 degree weather during a power outage. In any case, it wasn't easy, but it all worked out. From the back, the hitch is nearly invisible, and the Curt bike rack provides ample clearance to ensure that bikes do not collide with the vehicle. The hitch is well-made and sturdy. The hitch has no effect on ground clearance, which is crucial in a Prius.
br>I bought this hitch thinking it would fit on my Prius Prime, but when they put it on the lift and explained how to make it work, I was skeptical. I was taken aback and replied, "No. " They said they'd have to take out the back crash bar, cut a hole in the bumper cover, and cut a piece of the bumper off. After all of that, they warned us that it might not work once we're finished.
This hitch for my bike rack was installed by my mechanic; Extra bolts were provided, and the instructions were very clear, so the job went smoothly. Panels under the car have been lightly trimmed.
This receiver is not only too short to be useful, but it also won't fit any other CURT accessories. My CURT cargo basket is too shallow in the hitch receiver and sits flush against the bumper. br>br>Installation was also a pain because it didn't come with any hardware.
