The G80 is a dud, as everyone has said. This is a huge difference. One thing to keep in mind for anyone reading this: my diff was acting as if it were locked. Detroit was the phone number I dialed. "You must use Lucas HD gear oil," they said, adding, "we cannot state that certain oil manufacturers will not work. " These are the words that describe the city of Detroit's technological assistance. I didn't change the gear oil because I was too lazy, and it only "acted up" for a few days. My truck is a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 5. 8L V8. This is one of my favorites!.
Absolutely fantastic differential; I previously owned a G80 locker, and it did exactly what you'd expect it to do when power was applied. My spider gears, like the one before it, blew out when the old diff exploded. I was able to complete the installation of the new Detroit locker trutrac in about 6 hours, and it was extremely simple. So far, this didd has been a beast; I just let it rip and it takes care of everything; I'm hoping to have a long relationship with this diff. It performs exactly as intended, despite the fact that it is about 5 or 6 pounds heavier than the previous carrier. You'll get more bang for your buck with this option.
My 2006 GMC 8 was able to use it. Along with the master overhaul kit, there are five differentials. If you're doing it on your own, best of luck. It took me at least a week, including several trips to the auto parts store for specialty tools. I despised the fact that one axle had to spin at least 100 rpm faster than the other in order for the other to lock up. When it arrived, it made a very obnoxious bang. I didn't want this diff, but it was the only option for my truck because the true Detroit Locker was unavailable. Silverado Z71, half-ton, 2000 Bearings, seals, and a nice new cover were all installed. The end result is something I'm quite pleased with. Excellent traction without the annoyance of a barking dog.
The parts are beautiful and the shipping was quick. Because of the new gear design, there is no more clunk in the rear end when engaging. Make certain to use non-toxic materials. As stated in the instructions, there is a limit to the number of slips allowed. I came across some Valvoline that didn't have any additives in it.
