I've put about 500 miles on it so far, but no serious offroading; I'll keep you updated as my trip approaches. br>br>Why did you choose this one? For a couple of reasons, I chose this over a true locker. 1. br>br> 2. br>br> 3. br>br> 4. b The axle disconnect was removed, and my front axles were replaced with TJ axles, so the front diff is always spinning. As a result, this type of differential should not have a significant impact on road driving. br>br>2. You're more likely to break stuff with a true locker because you can put all of your torque through one tire, and in my case, I have a 4BT diesel in my jeep as well as a Klune V 4 to 1 crawl box. I'll break something if I'm in double low and all of my torque goes to one wheel. I'm aware that I'm giving up some trail capability, but I believe my drive line will last longer. 3. br>br>4. br>br>5. br>br>6. I'm wheeling with a friend who owns a Rubicon, and he's constantly locking and unlocking the front differential to make tight turns. This appears to be a simple task, but he either forgets to unlock it and thus misses the turn, or I end up waiting for him because unlocking takes time. As I previously stated, this is a minor detail, but I already have enough on my mind while wheeling. 4. br>br> I considered installing a posi to achieve similar results, but with a gear locker, I won't have to worry about smoking the clutches. br>br>Review: br>br> It's only been in for about 500 miles at this point. br>On the road is fantastic; I had no idea it was up there. When I'm backing out of a parking spot with my wheel cranked, I'm the only one who notices it. There will be some dragging from the tires. During normal driving, however, she behaves exactly as she did with an open diff. So that makes me happy! br>br>Off- br>Off- br>Off- br>Off- b I have not yet had the opportunity to put it through its paces on the road. In a few weeks, I'll be heading to Rausch Creek and hitting the black trail, where I previously broke my Dana 35, with this up front and my new 8. I'm expecting to finish a trip without breaking for the first time with an 8 out back. I'll keep you informed about how it goes. br>br>UPDATE 9/10/15br>Went to Rausch Creek for a three-day weekend. The diff did a fantastic job. I was able to accomplish a great deal more than I had previously been able to. It acted as if it was locked in mud and at high tire speeds. On heavy rocks, crawling in double low (my crawl ratio is about 162 to 1), she would spin one wheel fairly easily, but if I applied some brake, she would lock up nice and tight, allowing me to climb rock shelves with ease. br>br>As far as toughness is concerned. The diesel engine broke the main shaft in my transfer case or the spud shaft in the Klune V over the weekend. In any case, it outlasted the transmission. It satisfies my needs.
Because I didn't want the factory-installed $300 rear Trac-Lok, I ordered my 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport S with open differentials. Lok. Truetracs from Detroit are known for being bulletproof limited slip fully automatic differentials. They don't say anything. When traction is good, they lock up quickly but behave like open diffs. These helical gear differentials are quiet and easy to use. There is no need to maintain it. You can trick the diff to lock up by tapping the brake if you're on ice or have one tire off the ground and it's spinning; otherwise, they'll lock up on their own when necessary. These LSDs aren't true lockers, but they work on their own without the use of cables, electricity, or air. The correct part number for a Dana 30 JK with three axles is 912A585. 73 & Gears with a greater numerical value. For Dana 44 JK rear axles, you'll need the 913A589 Detroit Truetracs. Just keep in mind that Eaton may refuse to honor the warranty on tires larger than 33 inches. These should be installed by a professional shop with experience in doing so.
My Jeep was recently re-tuned. geared, and wanted to improve its overall capabilities as well. I was able to save some money by purchasing these on Amazon. They're fantastic, and I'm only now getting to the point where I can really put them to the test (I had to break in the gears first). These are virtually undetectable in everyday driving situations, but they kick in when you need them (front differential only in 4wd). When they do activate and transfer power, I can feel it, but it's very subtle and only lasts a fraction of a second. These would be better if they came from the factory, because after they've been re-used, they've become I'm spending around $1300 per axle in upgrades after gearing and installing these. It's also reassuring to know that my Jeep has turned into an unstoppable tank.
It made a significant difference.
This is what I used in the front of a Jeep TJ. I could feel it in the steering at first, but now it's completely neutral. It's a great way to keep traction when you're on the move.
It's great, and I'm glad I bought it.
When I got there, the item was moving around inside. It appeared to be in good condition when I opened it up.
