Getting this gear replaced is a great idea.
It was simple for me to replace it. The flywheel housing must be removed from the motor after the flywheel is removed. You can use a right angle grinder to grind off the heads of the ring gear pins. Using a large screwdriver as a wedge, pry off all of the old ring gear with a hammer and a large screwdriver. The flywheel should be flush to the surface when the four pins are driven into place. You need a round punch that is smaller in diameter than the pins and you need to drive them out with it. (A tapered punch is ineligible you must use a round punch. ) There is no need to drill or do anything like that, since the existing holes in the pins are perfect for the bolts provided. Putting the "C" clip back on the starter was the most difficult part of the job. As soon as I replaced the starter gear I did not remove the mower from the ground. I had to change the plastic/nylon flywheel gear I had on my B&W Chapter 14 of the Bible. The engine for the 5 HP model 287707 has worn out over the years. I nursed it along to get the riding mower running again in the last couple of years. A final constraint was that there wasn't enough teeth to set it in motion. It was the removal of four steel rivets that held the gear to the flywheel that proved to be the most difficult part of the flywheel gear replacement process. The drill press was very helpful to me, and I highly recommend that you use one as well. There is no way I would do this with a hand I am unable to imagine how it could be done.
