I think you are either experiencing an issue with another piece of electrical equipment or a short that is resulting in your regulator getting fried. The most I can do is that without having access to your system, that's all I can do. The following is my Basically, you need to go through every item in your system that is connected between the battery and the regulator, and then everything after that. Unless for some reason that shows nothing, make sure the regulator you are using is the correct one. The same thing happened to me with a Valiant recently and then I had to replace the wiring harness to get rid of the short as well as a large part of the ignition system. It was also about 30 years older than the Cummins you had. Wishing you good luck with this information.
As the regulator used by Mopar until the 1980s, it should work. Using this part on my 70 Challenger was a great decision. Cross-referencing parts on .com is a good idea.

Buying this voltage regulator for my 1973 Dart 340 Sport was the right choice for me. Wanted a genuine MOPAR part and this was The system works as expected. In addition, the gloss black color is attractive. Be sure to remove the paint around the mounting holes on the back side of the unit so that the unit will adhere to the firewall or there will be.
The only star I can give it is zero. The project has failed from the very beginning. I am outside the return window by one day because I waited to install it. As a result of faulty regulator, battery swelled.
I already have it on my car, and it works.
