Possible, I had a 2004 Rancher at the time. It is also very common to break the switch low on the left side, which is a ground wire, so it won't go To test it, unplug the switch wire and ground the ground to ground the wire. It will shift if it's wet and corroded. There is a problem with the switch or the connection if it shifts.

The 2004 Rancher ES I own was having issues shifting. It was an easy 10 minute job with only a few screws to deal with and fairly good access to the area the sensor is mounted to. This part is direct fit and fixed the shifting issue. It is important not to break the connector release tab so that the new sensor will remain firmly connected.
I had worked on everything else but didn't know about this part, so I gave up on trying to fix it until someone told me it might be this. It worked perfectly, shifting like new!.
It is nice to know that the part was an original Honda part that fitted perfectly.

If prior to buying "OEM" components I was made aware that two of the MOST important things for an Angle Sensor replacement are the a) "O RING" and the b) Dielectric grease, it would have been nice to be informed.
