The boot is for the AC alternator wire in the rear if I recall correctly. Either 10 or 12 gauge wire may be used.
I'm not sure, but as long as it fits through the wire eyelet and over the nut, I think this will work.

The cover was used for the connection to the generator, so as not to short out the generator and its lines. Overlaid the 67 Chevy alternator (ext regulator) output terminal, red plastic insulator, perfectly. I had to cut the connector off and insert the wire through the boot, and crimp and solder a new terminal. You don't have to worry about working under the hood anymore. Whenever replacing a part like this, it is essential to disconnect the battery.
