This intake replaced an AFE intake that literally ate a hole in my intake pipe after the filter after a considerable amount of work was being done to my 2006 Cooper S. The car has had so many modifications that it is hard to confidently attest to any power gains, and it replaced an aftermarket intake system that had already been installed. The only thing I can say is that this sounds fantastic! When using the AFE intake, the supercharger will make a much louder noise than before.
In the case of minor tasks, I prefer doing it myself. While the initial warning prior to step 1 advised obtaining the codes before disconnecting the negative battery terminal, the installation was straightforward. The battery cable did not need to be disconnected. In my opinion, the hardward (aluminum tubing) seems too flimsy (made in China quality) for $315. It stated to install the largest of the four clamps on one connection, but all of the clamps were the same size. Getting the short silicone tube attached to the intake port was quite a challenge. Make sure you "lubricate" the screen using mild soap and water. The rest of the day was easy. No idea of the mpg yet but it sounds like it's blowing more air when you step on it harder than normal. I can hear no difference in normal driving when I step on it hard. To achieve the same result I would have been better off purchasing a less expensive no-name brand and avoiding spending $150.
I would advise you to have another set of hands there, however.
The first K&N intake I have ever installed was on my Porsche Cayenne. I have used direct air intakes on several cars over the years and pay between $200 and $400 per unit. The K&N setup is what I always use A filter consists of N elements. All of the components on the stainless steel tube are in the right place and are neatly cut. It may surprise you to learn but the draft intake cut tube is actually helpful. My 2006 Mini Cooper S fits perfectly in this case.
I have had my Mini Cooper S since 2006, and since installing the cold air intake system, I notice at first how much better the car is running, and how easily I can rev all the way to redline, in comparison to before. Until you reach over 4000 rpm, the sound is wonderful. Until I measure the gas mileage, I can only rely on the onboard computer As a result of the installation, performance is significantly better on the board computer.
The state of California has decided that these products are CARB legal (smog legal). It's one of the only CARB legal intakes for the MINI Cooper S, so it's worth the extra money. The quality of the product is excellent. It was a bit challenging to line up one of the mounts, but it still fit nicely. highly recommend this to anyone who wants to achieve a deep growl and improve the air flow.
The California Motor Vehicles Commission has also deemed this smog legal! I like it. Those who are looking for a throaty sound will be disappointed. SC is where it's at! I have not tested HP gain, so I cannot comment on that. A little laggy at low RPM, but it feels good at high RPM (I haven't tested HP gain).
The car looks great, I just added some heat shield around the intake hose to keep it cooler while.
