Surfaces that are clean adhere quite well to them. There is an easy way for engine compartments and even new batteries to have a thin layer of oil or dirt on them. This is very likely to interfere with most adhesives, and It may be a good idea to mechanically secure the heating pad if you are unsure. My experience with them has been that they are simple and are working quite well, given the dozen or so I have used. Please be aware that they do not have a thermostat built-in and can get quite hot when not connected to a battery or other heat sink. We have tried more expensive brands (some that do not even contain adhesive) and it performs just as well.
