Our spouse loves the top down, but she does not like the hair carnage, so we spent some time finding reviews on this as well. Keeping your side windows up causes a "bubble" of air pressure to create a shield that blocks most of the wind from entering your This is true if you leave your windows open - it causes more wind if you leave your windows open. If you are looking through the rear view mirror, the reflection from the windows needs to be either partially or fully up for it to be effective.

Be aware that some owners aren't happy with the reflection from them. Although I find it a distraction, I do not consider it a major one.
