Though I don't recall exactly what I did, I think I just tugged and slid the length to the correct measurement. My favorite part is that it is both sturdy and well made.
In most cases, the product works on cars, vans, and SUVs. Although, if you are hanging a lot of clothes, you might need to get some S clips. Attachments for the racks made of plastic are not very durable and can easily break. Using an S clip to connect to the grab handles, hook it to the metal clips at either end of the bar, and it will hold just fine. This method worked for me while traveling with a full complement of suits and shirts for three months.

Sturdy and easily handled, it is a good bar to have at hand. It is pliable rather than rigid, but the plastic hooks that attach to the clothes handles on the back set are rigid. My real clothes were not able to be hung on it for more than a few minutes before it collapsed.
