They were installed and then the spare was installed. Having a spare tire that is the perfect length and made with a durable rubber that flexes against the tire is a great feature. I would suggest mounting your spare and then measuring how much distance you need. Add 1/4 inch to the length you need to get your spare to fit.

Probably not the best option for a spare tire when your Jeep is stolen, I had to add a black garment to make it longer to accommodate 35" spare tire, but at least it will prevent the tire from being stolen.
