Nobody seems to mention that this thing will be fully extended, well past the liftgate's maximum extension. With the gate fully raised on my 2013 Equinox, there was not enough room to get this on without compressing the support, which, let me just say, is NOT an easy task, and it wants to expand back out immediately, so getting it on was a very difficult adventure for me last night. However, now that it's turned on, it appears to work properly and, as far as I can tell, has resolved my issue with the liftgate slowly closing after opening. Good product, but keep in mind that it may not be as simple as everyone claims.
