Pertronix 91761 Ignitor II for Datsun 6 Cylinder Engine

It worked fine in my 1972 240Z for the time it was there. However, after only a few years and probably less than 2000 miles, it died last year, leaving me stranded and requiring a tow. It was my birthday, and my wife and I were planning a nice drive and picnic along the coast. We stopped at a grocery store about 3 miles from our house to get food and drinks because it was a hot day in California. When I got out of the store, there was no spark in the car. The battery was fine, but there were no electrons firing when I cranked it up and down. After 40 minutes of troubleshooting and messing with it, I gave up. I waited for the tow truck for two hours in the scorching heat. The entire journey took: 6 miles, 3 hours (half on a tow truck): what a terrible way to spend my birthday! br>br>When I got home, I ordered another one right away, but I ended up having to re-order it. Just to get the car running, I installed points and a condenser that night. I returned the Pertronix and am still running the points and pondering my next steps. Many people with the same problem, dead ignitor, were found via an internet search. br>br>Every now and then, I'm tempted to order another, but then I remember that day waiting for the tow truck in the 95-degree heat.

My mechanic gushed about the Pertronix ignition, claiming that it would "completely transform" the vehicle: Starting is easier, there is more power, and the throttle response is improved. I'd seen it on a few older classic cars as well. I guess I had high expectations. 3 out of 5 stars It's perfectly acceptable. I own a 240Z and am experiencing the same issue that has been discussed on several forums: the ignition cuts out at "high" RPMs. At around 4500 rpm, mine goes crazy. It works in the same way that an rpm limiter does. he begins to stutter and buck This is a new problem; it used to run fine up to 6,000rpm when it had mechanical points. It's not what you'd expect from a "high performance" ignition system, is it? Pertronix hasn't been very helpful so far. I realize this isn't a common car, but it is a common issue with Z's. If a product isn't working properly, they should either fix it or not sell it. It's not something I'd go out of my way to buy. A rev limiter is something I can live with. I don't drive fast, but for $200, this isn't what I wanted. Oh, and did I say their wiring diagram was incorrect for my vehicle? I finally figured it out, but they failed to follow through once more.
