This is what I did with my 1989 5. In a marine application, the Mercruiser is number seven. I'm not sure about the counter-rotation, but it should work in any case. After I installed the Ignitor and High Output Coil, my engine started right up.
My 1973 350cu Chevy has a Malory distributor and it runs great! There would be no more tinkering with "points," but I'm not sure it would be beneficial. It's possible if you've got a Chevy 305.
That sticker doesn't bother me; I believe there should be a part stamped on the metal plate, ML- This ignition has a number of 181 in it. If you know what distributor you have, the Pertronix website and support line can assist you in locating the correct one. I hope this helps; also, never use Serria marine rotors; they are terrible, and I was paddling back after only ten minutes on the lake. Twice!!
It was designed to fit a Mallory YL dual point distributor from the 1970s that was installed on a small block (283) Chevrolet.

I've never spent more money on my boat than I have on this. On my 5, my old points were out of adjustment and corroding. Mercruiser with a 7-liter engine. I replaced them with this conversion unit and added the number one. A new PerTronix flamethrower coil (PerTronix 40011) with a 5 ohm resistance (PerTronix 40011) and a Sierra 18-ohm distributor cap (Sierra 18-ohm). 5376) and now my boat starts the second I press the key; it's never been this easy to start before. Every time, it gets off to a fast start. NOTE: This unit is identical to the Sierra brand (sierra 18-). 5296- Sierra sells the same PerTronix conversion unit under the Sierra brand and charges more than $140 for it, owing to the marine markup. This is the correct unit for your boat if you have a Mallory 8 cylinder YL or YD distributor (top distributor cap has swing over clips that screw down and hold the cap down). To get my timing close and locked down, I had to manually rotate the silver plate close enough to where the original points were located in my distributor housing. After that, I replace the distributor cap and complete the timing by rotating the distributor and checking it with a timing light while it's running.
I bought two of these to replace the ignition on my boat engines with electronic ignition. The engines are 454 Crusader inboards that were in excellent condition prior to my taking on the project. At least, that's what I thought! I used these with a Pertronix flamethrower coil and replaced the cap, rotor, and wires all at the same time. br>br>Very simple to install; the first engine took about 2 hours because I installed the igniter and new cap with the old coil because I was hesitant to replace everything at once in case there was a problem. I was so pleased with the results of the first engine that I changed everything at once on the second engine; it took about 45 minutes and I took my time; there were no issues with counter rotating engines, and the installation was identical on both engines. Engines fire up right away! br>br> On each, the idle speed increased from 750 to just over 1000, and I had to lower the idle speed. One had perfect timing, while the other required some tweaking (and may have been out of whack before I began). After you've tweaked the idle and timing, it's time to put it all together. WOW! Engines sound smooth, start up quickly, and appear to be in better shape. br>br>I'm glad I took the time and money to do this.
It worked perfectly! I used this with a Palmer 220 marine engine from 1974, and it solved the points system adjustment problems I was having. Even though I'll probably replace the entire distributor at some point, this system was exactly what I needed for a short-term fix. The engine is in excellent condition, with complete detonation and excellent spark. It comes highly recommended!.
With my old Mallory duel points distributor, it works perfectly. Burned points are no longer an issue. The only thing to remember is to reset your timing after replacing the old points with PerTronix. If you just plug it in and try to run, it'll be so far along that you'll get a lot of pinging. Please do not inquire as to how I know this.
I have not yet installed the Pertronix ignition system in the engine, but I have used many Pertronix ignition systems in various engines and distributors; this was the first time in a Mallory distributor. They are extremely simple to install and operate, and I am confident that this one will as well.
My coil becomes extremely hot as a result of this. Pertronix was notified of the situation. When I asked if it was all right, the tech hung up on me. Poor customer service; the truck is functional but not exceptional. My other cars' coils do not get hot, so I'm not sure how long this one will last. Anyway. There was no assistance, no response, and there was no guarantee.
I was up and running in a matter of days after receiving my new parts from Amazon.
The second, on the other hand, is a complete failure. Is it possible that the PerTronix is the culprit?.
