I have not yet installed this, but according to the instructions, the coil is removed and the plate is secured with screws (if my memory serves me correctly), and the new coil must be mounted.
This device's specifications range from 8 to 16 volts. They may have included a 6 volt number as well.
Yes, you'll need to change the battery and alternator. My tractor is performing at a level it has never reached before.

My car is a 1950 Ford 8N with a front-wheel drive. I've had this mount distributor for about ten years, and it's a 12V conversion. Normally, it runs like a champ, but every now and then, I've spent weeks trying to figure out why it wouldn't start or run, which isn't uncommon with these machines. When there's a problem, it's usually caused by a spark. This go- New points were installed, the timing was adjusted, and the carburetor was cleaned. Things I've tried before, but each time resulted in a sputtering tractor that backfired. Quality control is one of the issues with aftermarket points and condensers. New parts are frequently found to be defective. I'm not sure if that was a factor in my problem, but I believe it was. I finally bit the bullet and bought this Pertronix electronic ignition and coil after getting tired of removing the distributor and adjusting points. Since I probably flooded it and wetted the plugs while over-heating it, I might have been able to get it running by simply changing the plugs. I was choking while trying to get it to run. It's worth noting that I did replace the Autolite 437s, which I'm sure helped. br>br>It was a piece of cake to install the ignition module in the old distributor housing. The most difficult part was determining where the coil should be mounted. See my photo for the location I chose to mount mine; it may appear odd, but it serves its purpose well. It's simple to use and ideal for the wire lengths that come with it. (Note: The instructions mention a shim washer, which my old distributor didn't have; if yours doesn't, you can skip the "install the shim washer" instruction. I contacted Pertronix customer service, and the representative was extremely pleasant and helpful. Between the old distributor housing and the wafer-based distribution system, there were some visible cracks. After installing the board top plate, I filled in the small cracks with clear silicone to keep moisture out. br>br>My tractor, which hadn't been used in eight years, started up again. weeks, it purred as soon as the starter switch was pressed. In a literal sense. I can now set the throttle to the lowest position, which I've never been able to do before, and the tractor idles beautifully. This is most likely due to the Pertronix coil's much hotter sparks, which produce a 40kV spark when compared to my old square-wire coil. a 12 volt coil capable of producing 17 kV Also, no choking is required to begin, so there will be no flooding. br>br>I should have installed this module the first time I had spark problems; I'm glad I did; I'm sure I won't have any starting or running problems for years. This upgrade is simple to complete and will save me hours of maintenance time in the future. A+++.
The only flaw is that the cover that replaces the square coil isn't quite square, but it does the job. My tractor starts, runs, and idles like it's never done before. Ford 9N.
Doing a 12V conversion was the best thing I've ever done. It's a pain to start up that old 6V positive ground and breaker points ignition. My tractor now starts instantly thanks to the new 12v conversion! and it runs like a champ!.
Because the black wire was too short to exit the distributor, the connector had to be cut off and a wire spliced in. For the red and black wires that pass through the fiber plate, there is no grommet included. There was no gasket for the plate, and the stock cork didn't quite fit. Because the plate is only held down on one side by the middle stud, it isn't as tight on the other side. I'm concerned about moisture getting in, but I think the electronics are sealed well enough that this shouldn't be an issue.
The only issue was that the cap wasn't square, so I had to cut 1/16" off one side to make the adapter for the old coil fit flush. br>Everything is fine! br>Waiting for the rest of the parts to arrive so we can start it up next week.
If I had purchased this many years ago, I could have avoided so many headaches and breakdowns. The 8n's original ignition system was notoriously unreliable, so this is a fantastic solution. There is no need to install an external ballast resistor on the positive (12v) terminal because the coil included with the kit has built-in resistance. It's fantastic, and you can get started right away!.
Parts are missing. The worst set of instructions I've ever encountered. Pertronix customer service is AWFUL. They sent it back because they won't be able to get the missing part until after the holidays. a slug Apathetic.
