With no pinion, it's a little more difficult to get everything set up
3/5

I'm trying to put Yukon gears in the back of a Jeep 35. The issue is that they don't provide us with pinion depth any longer! When I called to inquire about it, they stated that it was a "warranty" issue, and that people would not go by the gear pattern! They actually give you a pinion shim spec, regardless of the original gears' shim spec. They give you backlash, and you have to double-check your gear pattern. br>So, here's the deal: br>Salvage or purchase an extra pinion big bearing and hone it to a slip fit, then install a pinion shim to their specifications and set the pinion to proper preload. Install the carrier and shim it to the proper backlash as you did with the ring gear (. 006ish), after which you grease the gears and inspect the pattern. If the pattern is off, remove the carrier, remove the pinion, and replace the shim to adjust the depth, reinstall the pinion to preload, reinstall the carrier, and reshim until the pattern is correct. 006 (because you changed the pinion depth, your other shimming won't work), then reapply grease to check the pattern. Rep the steps until you've achieved the desired result. Now you must disassemble everything and install the proper pinion bearings before completing the final assembly! When I do Richmond and other jobs, they give me a pinion depth, the guy who hobbs the gears in writes it on the pinion, I assemble the pinion with slip fit bearings, install it, measure the depth, pull it out and add shims for proper depth, check it and pull it out to press bearings and reinstall to proper preload - That's the end of it! All I have to do now is set the carrier's backlash. You'll have the prettiest pattern as confirmation if you measured everything properly before applying the grease. br>Yukon Gear is a bunch of Bitches who are more interested in covering their asses; the instructions are vague and generically worded so that if your gears start howling coming down a hill, they'll have an 'out' in terms of warranty. br>I like their shim packs, but I'm not going to buy another set of their gear.

This isn't everything you'll need to start over
3/5

Update 7/7/20br>After a year and a half, the front ring gear lost some teeth. Bolts didn't work, which was a bummer. br>br> The term "master rebuild" is misleading because it does not include axle bearings and seals. This rebuild was estimated to cost $550 at the garage. Due to parts that did not fit properly, it ended up costing $1150, but it is now completed. Go for one of the complete kits, preferably with the carrier housing and innards, even if it is more expensive. Check to see if you've purchased the correct series. The rear D44 on my 2008 Jeep Wrangler is a series 3 vehicle. You'll have to figure out which one applies to you.

Mine was a pre-owned item

Yukon 4. Jeep JK 88 from the year 2012. My guess is that it was refurbished or used. The old yellow paint is visible. I'm in the middle of installing them right now, so I'll let you know how they go. The front differential bolts included with the kit are too large and will not fit the ring; The stock bolts will have to be used again. Jeep JK model year 2012.

The Good: This is a complete rebuild kit, but I think I'll use a different brand next time

I'm working on a JKRubicon that has D44 front and rear, but the front isn't as tough as the back. Before realizing we needed the D44 specs, we torqued the front to match the rear and spun a bolt with the "jk" specs. The Rubicon's rear gear has larger bolts that can withstand the load, whereas the front gear has smaller bolts that can't. Fortunately, the supplied bolt failed before the carrier/ring, so it could be saved. I just think it should say "Dana 44 JK Rear/Rubicon" in the instruction book. br>br>The Bad: br>The Pinion Gear, Bearing Race, and even their chromoly axles were all chipped and damaged when they arrived. I'd like to point the finger at UPS for the axles, which were wrapped loosely in plastic and could have been banged around during transport. The race and pinion gears, on the other hand, were extremely well protected, having been vacuum sealed and wrapped in styrofoam with undamaged boxes. This was the only way I could figure it came from the factory. br>br>Be patient with me because the next flaw is beyond my comprehension. The rear pinion seal is broken, and there is no customer service to speak of
3/5

So far, I've completed the rear kit installation on my 2017 Jeep Wrangler Sport. br>br>1. Shims between the housing and the bearing race are used to set the pinion depth in the standard DANA 44 manual. The pinion and bearing are separated by shims in this kit. I can put up with having to press the bearing out of the pinion, but it gets old quickly. br>br>2. I had to order a new rear pinion seal because the one I had was too small. 3. br>br>4. br>br>5. br>br>6. I left two messages with customer service and technical support regarding torques and the seal - No one returned my call. Stay away, please. br>br> There are a slew of other brands to choose from.

This is an incredible kit
5/5

For what you get, this is a fantastic deal. This is a complete kit, and I am very pleased with all of the components. The 13s are extremely responsive, and the build quality is outstanding. Note that this took me a week to understand and install; if you've never installed a ring and pinion with bearings before, you might want to take it to a shop; I used thousands of dollars worth of tools to get it done correctly.
