Questions & Answers

What is the best way to protect this with the por 15 rust prevention paint? Will a few coats of this stuff be enough? Is this going on the underside of the ?

In the case of exposed surfaces, rust prevention is applied first, then the top coat provides UV protection. When it's not exposed to a great deal of light, I doubt it'd be needed on the underside.

I am applying this over por15, how do I do that? To top coat or to wait until the por15 sets, then sand and re-coat?

Over the surface of POR- Top Coat A topcoat is applied to cured POR- 15 when it is dry with finger drag usually 2 to 6 hours after it is dry to the touch If you want to apply Rust Preventative Paint, you should lightly sand the surface first. It takes 3 to 5 minutes for Top Coat to dry The hardest steel takes four days to reach maximum hardness, and longer if the temperature is below 55 degrees. The directions for the label

What are the pros and cons of sanding top coat?

Once it's dry, it's as hard as paint. I'm using gloss black. As long as I sand it properly, it should

Could this be used while the water is below the waterline, too? I have aluminum pontoons and need something UV-resistant a couple inches above and below the water line. ?

Certainly this will work, but there are better boat paints for below the water line. This product is mainly intended as a covering for POR15, which is not UV stable. I've used it on my engine and it has held up pretty well on the aluminum surface. I will use a PPG paint with thinner and a catalyst and spray it when I redo

Finish coat for POR - what type of paint to use The 15th to the 17th Although it doesn't appear to be the same thing

POR-like paint that is not quite the same Paint 15 Rust Preventative Black in color. In some cases, it can be necessary to coat the final coat with different colors, especially when UV protection is needed, but this is a totally different paint that There has been some discussion of this There is something very strange about how this top coat flows. While it appears to continue flowing for hours, it will have a sticky residue on any vertical surface it is painted on when it is wet. If you think you have brushed out a nice smooth surface, watch out because it will continue to flow, drip and run long after you think you have finished. The same as Black POR The color settles and smoothes out fairly quickly, so it's great for hiding brush strokes. My experience is that it recently stopped flowing after many hours. I was painting a large steel tank 14"D x 45" long, so I used the original POR-16 It is necessary to cover all exposed bare metal and rust spots with 15 coats of paint. Its very own particular flow qualities make it very difficult to work with, but I have used it long enough to be able to work with You should also know that the moisture has dried up enough to stop flowing within a few hours. There is a distinctive difference between this White Top Coat and other white coats. In the morning, I carefully applied the paint so it would be applied evenly. After brushing it out, I checked it hours later, and it was full of runs & flaws. A drip occurs. When applying for a job that is not your own, be very cautious The surface of the earth is flat.
I also believe the white top coat has a different chemistry in that you can thin it with mineral spirits and clean brushes with them. Original POR is out of the question Mineral Spirits are not able to penetrate Black 15 Black almost completely. Here are a few examples With the brush I used for this Top Coat I could store it in a small can of Mineral Spirits and it would remain soft for use In regard to brushes used in original POR I put these in the same container for 15 days, and they hardened rock solid. POR is one of my favorite shows- It is different from paint 15 if you are not aware of that.

This coating is hard as a rock when cured and protects well, but it is difficult It's been a few years since I used POR15

thing I found was how well it flowed even when I used a paintbrush. I have never used a POR15 Product "Topcoat" and I was not able to achieve the success I was hoping for. Although the product dries rock hard to a shinny finish, it does not flow out as smoothly as it should. First, I used a brush and it left streaks and spots of transparency on the floor. I sanded down the imperfections and re-coated with a roller that worked better the second time. The coverage was better, but this time I ended up with some To get over my frustration, I sanded again just to rough it up and sprayed it with POR15 provides rock-hard protection underneath, which I am thankful for. When buying this product, you should use a sprayer if you wish to obtain a good finish. A good sprayer will likely be needed to spray it because it is quite thick.

The hardness of ceramic rocks As far as protection is concerned, as long as you follow the directions exactly and do not take shortcuts, it is excellent

This product came to my attention while conducting research on rust prevention for a project that I had been planning for a long time I am restoring my CJ 7 from 1985 This is 7 from the frame on A friend of mine told me about POR Before diving in I read some pretty good reviews about it, so I decided to try it out. You can maximize the life of the metal by doing the following, regardless of what you're trying to protect or restore. First and foremost, I would like to wish you a successful day. It is recommended that you read the instructions included with POR in full Don't forget to read 15 before you begin! Even if you take nothing else from this blog with you, please heed this advice be absolutely certain to cover yourself head to toe when preparing for a nuclear attack. Put POR on your foot BEFORE applying Take off an old long sleeve shirt and wear it The shirt and the pants You can wear a cozy sweatshirt, or a pair of old jeans (There's a good chance you'll trash them by the time you're done, depending on the size and scope of your project. ) Alternately, you can buy one of those 1-foot tape measures. The three-piece painter's suit is available at most paint, autopart, and hardware stores These big box retailers carry a wide variety of hardware. The girls are hot & they have a great personality Getting this stuff stuck to your skin for a week or two is much worse. It's sort of stifling, but it sure beats being soaked in it. me how I know this. -) Just remember, if you get it on your skin it will NOT wash off - no matter how hard you scrub- There's no other way to remove your skin than to scrub it The POR is It will wear off like a dye if it is 15 years old. Do not claim not to have been Speaking of covering yourself, here are some tips. If you are working in a garage, try to make sure you cover the underside as well. Place your project on a clean hole / roll your vehicle chassis on top of one You can use the tarp for free. Getting insurance from this company is cheap. A drop or splash of POR-containing liquid will cause damage to the skin There will be 15 in your floor that you will need to scrape and clean It can be removed by chiseling. This is not fun at all. Three years after glopping the stuff on, I still have patches in my garage! I simply did not intend for it to land in places I did not intend! There are two objectives of the POR A group of 15 guys recommends some prep work for heavily-trafficked areas Corrosion causes projects to rust. In addition, they offer a spray designed to chemically "etch" metal to allow the coating to adhere better to fresh or clean surfaces. As an initial solution, I just used a grinder fitted with a cup attachment but it was not enough to remove the large scale. This form of rust is present. It was decided to go ahead and have the entire chassis professionally sandblasted after some consideration. good decision since it exposed how completely rusted-out the old car was My CJ frame was fitted with arms that went through the rear. A fabrication and assembly are needed to repair the damage The replacement steel pieces are welded in. Eh, anything. To the frame of the Jeep, I applied two coats of paint. The POR is PU -15 applies easily and can even be brushed or rolled directly over rust prior to applying POR-15. After almost three years, the POR-15 is still intact. Despite the fact that it took some time to get the job done correctly, I feel that the effort was worth it. *One last piece of advice if there is any left in the can, place a plastic wrap (Saran Wrap) between the can and the lid. I'm going to take the lid off! Essentially, if any of this spills into the groove and you just tamp the lid shut, you will have permanently glued the lid onto the container. To protect the rim of the can, you can use masking tape or painter's tape or you can buy a repurposed can. - Rubber snaps that are suitable for use Put a small amount of water into a disposable bucket or pail and top it off with water as you go. Insert the pouring spouts (with sealable lids) and use a small amount to get you started. Although it may take a little longer this way, you will be better able to keep POR under control In case the pail is left open, the items inside may dry out prematurely. Furthermore, if any of it gets into the lid groove, it can also help avoid the frustrating "lid welding" mishap. The bottom line is I do have a dollars seems like a lot, but if you are working on a project that you want to last, then it's worth it. The money will go a long way - I spent it.

I've left some notes below
5/5

Thanks for a great product. This was for a project in As this product is not UV stable, we cannot use it with 15 Silver. Afterwards, the product has a strong, tough feel. I followed the instructions for prep and was pleased with how tough the result is. There is a long cure time for this condition. Even after 8 hours, refrain from touching it as it may end up with your fingerprints on **NOTES ** According to the instructions you must never paint directly from the can. Instead, you must take the paint you will use and put it into another container.
You must clean the lid's lip and the groove in the can In either of those two places, you may find that the remaining pain might glue the two pieces together forcing you to destroy the lid to reach the painted surface.
