As far as we know, you can use a special single wire with a voltage of no less than 0.6 volts and no more than twice the length. It is not battery powered and uses electricity from the spark plug wire so limits its use. You may want to check with the manufacturer to find out whether longer wires are available.

My solution was to drill a small hole on the left side panel, just above the vent slots, to run the wire through, and to screw the meter in place with two To do this, wrap the wire around the spark plug wire as close as possible to the spark plug boot. Make sure that you wrap the wire around the plug wire at least five times, keeping the windings close together, and then tie it in place with a zip tie (wire Some people have previously asked whether the rubber sheathing from the spark plug wire needs to be removed in order for the meter's wire to be wrapped I strongly recommend that you do not remove the rubber sheathing from the spark plug wire. The meter wire should wrap over the rubber sheathing. I was looking at yet another one for my MTD Yard Machines snow blower, but I'll probably end up cutting off the extra wire, or coiling it up and cabling it inside the generator, motorcycle, snow mobile, etc. I think it will last for a long time because it does what it is advertised to do.

There is no change in the reading on the meter. Since it needed a minimum of 0, I thought it would be a 1. The difference in 15 minutes would at least be noticeable in 1 hour. There is nothing. It would have been better if I gave it zero stars, but that is unfortunately.
This is the one I used on my Generac 17 years ago and it is still going strong. Just a few weeks ago, I put one on my 25hp out board. This is a very simple and easy-to-install product.
I can install it in a few minutes. In order to keep track of how many hours have been spent on each of my machines, I purchased a timer for my brand new Yamaha superjet.
The generator was connected without the need for any software to run. As soon as I took off the back cover of the engine, I measured the length of cable I needed. I cut the provided cable accordingly, wrapped it around the spark plug wire, and routed it up through a pinhole I punched in the rubber cover of the spark plug. In order to secure it, I used two provided screws and mounted it on the exhaust side just above the handle.
It does what it is advertised to do. My Yamaha 2000 has been fitted with this. Wrapping the wire around the spark plug wire is notoriously difficult. You may need some needle nose pliers or something similar to do the job. A gauge of this type should have been standard on the unit, as it makes sense logically. The gauge already installed on the generator is not going to set you back much more than a few bucks. It is for this reason that four stars are available.
