It requires an internal battery, which is not included, so it can be easily replaced. The positive and negative wire of the tachometer are hooked to the car battery, and a third wire is simply wrapped around any spark plug wire of the motor being monitored. Keep in mind to set the tachometer according to what type of motor you are monitoring.
Due to my wire modifications, and the fact that I discarded part of it, I am unavailable to provide you with an exact answer. I had to separate the wires on my side by side UTV since the battery was in front and the motor was behind The ignition switch had to also be changed as I wanted the power to be routed through it. In my estimation, the sensor wire was approximately 30 to 36 inches in length. Providing the engine and battery are in close proximity to each other, the unit will operate (unmodified). I just wanted to point out that the device works really well. In the event the warranty was at all at risk, I do not suggest modifying the wires. As I was installing it, I thought I would use the TACH to find out whether or not it works before installing it permanently. It is a good thing I tried it as you can't really see the numbers on the tachometer with the blue LED lights. Having realized that this would be for testing purposes only, I decided that I wouldn't keep it on my computer. With a sun shield I fabricated from a scrap piece of aluminum I had around, I at least have a chance of seeing the numbers, otherwise this tach would be completely useless for It is not worth my time to buy this tachometer unless I get a bad one. In the picture the camera is pointed away from the sun, under the overhang of my garage. A sun shade is essential in the yard as you can't see it without it.
It did not require any changes to the function. I forgot to unhook the power to the unit over winter, which eventually drained the batteries.
