The heavy wires do not go to the battery, and this is the engine side of the plug. They are connected to the starter solenoid as well as a ground connection.
It has seven wires and matches this part boatside part; I had to buy both due to rotting wires and ended up with a couple extra wires. It performs admirably. 474-CDI Electronics Mercury/Mariner Wiring Harness, 9550, Boatside (1968-), Mercury/Mariner Wiring Harness, 9550, Mercury/Mariner Wiring Har 1981)
The mermaid of old With the push button choke, you can control the red or blue bands.
It should work, but you'll almost certainly need to buy both the boatside and outboard harnesses. The plugs may not be compatible if this is not done.

This item arrived in excellent condition and was delivered quickly. On a 1980 Mariner 85hp, I used it. Although this product did not match exactly, it was simple to install. Because the wires are color-coded, it's as simple as detaching the old and reconnecting the new. The color coding on the power pack is very clear. There are a few extras (i. e. The plug did not match the tachometer. If you order this for a similar motor, you must also order the matching boat harness, otherwise the two will not connect. I would have given it 5 stars if the wires and insulation were just a little thicker.
This isn't an exact match because the retaining bracket isn't made the same way as the original and thus isn't as secure.
On a 1978 Mercury 1150, it worked perfectly.
It was precisely installed. The instructions are clear and concise. The only drawback is that I would have preferred the pins to be tinned for use in a salt environment, but I suppose most outboards in the United States are used on fresh water, so it isn't a big deal.
br>The plug is perfectly sized to fit into the boat wiring harness, and everything is clearly marked for easy installation.
Because my old one was shot, I put one in my 1971 Mercedes-Benz 500. It was simple to install and looks good, but expect to loom and tie up all of the wiring because each wire is about 6" longer than the stock harness, which is extremely inconvenient. However, everything else about it is fantastic.
We were in desperate need of something like this. Thank you for the description, which is accurate for our 76 115hp Mercury L6 outboard.
Simple to put together.
