Among the list of equipment that can be used is the JD 318. It will operate with several different Onan engines. The one I installed is on a tractor with a 20 hp wheel horse.
The hole is approximately 3 inches wide, 2 inches long, and 3/4 inches thick based on my estimation without testing. My Onan P218 engine worked perfectly with this part, and it fits into a cutout in the blower housing perfectly.
If you use the one for ac1 or ac2, it won't matter
Apparently, it fits my 1991 318 with an Onan motor. It's apparently the newer style Onan but I'm not sure of any other specifics.

My lawn tractor's battery wasn't getting a full charge when I was cutting the lawn -- hmm, maybe the 30 year old voltage regulator or the stator is malfunctioning? My Onan tractor engine's stator usually doesn't die from a spark caused by my careless brushing of the wrench against the voltage regulator plug, but I guess it did. For "new old stock", JD wanted $100, okay, it had been sitting on their shelf for a while, but that seemed high to me. There is no need for 85% more money when using this regulator. Each time I cut my cord, the battery gets full charge.
Putting it on a John Deere 318 with an Onan 218 engine, I noticed the battery light was on. The original regulator was only putting out 12 volts instead of a higher rating of The voltage range is from 5 to 25 volts. Despite the fact that this picture is very similar to the original, I cannot say that it would have been the perfect fit for It fit in slightly more, but there was an area or two where this was bigger. However, it was not able to be bolted in as far as it was in I still find it to work well.
I had to call my dealer to find out how much the new rectifier was and they told me $300. After I recovered I went on Amazon found this and ordered it. I installed it and it's working perfectly now.
Having replaced a faulty voltage regulator on a Case 646 tractor, I found this to be effective. We did not want to replace this unit because it is clearly labeled as a positive unit and it has the two outer terminals that connect to the stator. This unit is clearly labelled as positive, the center terminal is connected to the battery. I am now able to charge my tractor at the right voltage due to the unit. It is important to mount the unit in a cool area to dissipate heat. However, I have never noticed the unit getting anything Besides being great value, it is also easy to use!.
Although it did not fit as perfectly into the shroud hole as we'd hoped it would, it fit okay nonetheless. Additionally, the factory bolt's threads were different from the bolt I was able to cut, but I altered the bolt itself to give it new threads. This isn't the way I fix things normally, but it appears to be working fine now and it is.
My 1977 Sears 14/6 Garden Tractor worked perfectly with this part as a direct replacement for the nla 7809R. I have used it for only one hour, but it has already worked well. Charging it doesn't even cause it to get warm. Despite a tight fit, the connector was able to be attached without any problem. The ground wire has been connected independently so there is no need for chassis ground. I was able to use one of the original mounting bolts to attach the new one to the frame under the seat where the old one was mounted because the threaded hole is 1/4". In order to space the regulator from the frame, I used three 1/4" flat washers. The Tecumseh OH140 20 amp alternator seems compatible with this. Everything seems to be going well so far. The results will come in due time.
The unit was installed on a P218g engine of the Onan manufacturer. The original regulator did not appear to be functioning properly. The Aftermarket unit shows the amp meter showing So far, I'm happy with the price, will see how it unfolds in the future.
Whenever I search online, I cannot find documentation on this device, including on There are only four terminals, so it seems intuitive A battery has three terminals two from the alternator, one from the post ground, and one from the battery's center terminal. This was intended to be a shunt regulator for a 12v battery, but it is either governed in series, or is not regulated at all - neither would be useful in this application. The application I intend to use cannot utilize this technology. The item had to be returned to the store. The issue was not that it was defective, but rather that there was no documentation and no understanding of its internals. In addition, it does not ship with any documentation.
