Questions & Answers

Is the cover included with the Airhawk 2 medium seat pad, or is it an add-on?

A black cover, two straps, a plastic inflatable pad, and a repair kit are included with the seat pad.

Is this cushion 14 X 14 or 16 X 7? There are two sizes listed for this product. ?

I just took a measurement of the AirHawk as it sits on my BMW/K1600gtl's seat. The actual dimensions are 16" wide at the widest point and 13" long. This appears to be the 14 X14 listing, in my opinion. Plus, it's been in use for about two months, so it's possible that it's spread slightly.

How far up in the seat do you sit?

As little air as possible should be used. It's not enough if you're an inch taller. I set mine up on a wooden chair and adjust it until I can no longer feel the chair.

Has anyone tried it on a Vulcan EN 500 from 2002?

It's a world-wide phenomenon, dude! Simply make sure the pad's dimensions match those of your bike, and you're good to go! You can now proceed.

A flaw in the design
3/5

Despite the fact that the seat is comfortable, as others have stated, I am only giving it two stars because it leaked after only a week of use. The leak, which occurred at the base of the valve, was similar to what others have reported. The valve is held in place by a hard plastic piece that sits inside the bladder. However, over time and with bladder flexing, the hard plastic with sharp edges will jab against the bladder, puncturing it. If you're primarily a local rider who only rides for a half hour every now and then, the puncture will take some time to occur. However, if you're going on a long trip and plan to ride for six hours each day, the puncture will occur much sooner - as was the case with me. br>br>Ok, the product is covered by a warranty, and they'll send me a replacement bladder, but I'm sure it won't be long before another puncture occurs in the same spot. This area of the bladder needed to be reinforced with thicker material, according to the company.

For three months, it was a great product, but then it began to leak
3/5

This would be a five-star review if it weren't for what appears to be a design flaw: I bought mine in August, drove it for 1500 miles, and by December it was leaking air. I'm 6' 2" tall and weigh 180 pounds, so I'm a pretty big guy. I'm a normal-sized person, and I keep my bike in the garage to keep it out of the rain, so this is just regular use for me. br>br>I did a test to see where the leak is coming from, and it's coming from the base of the valve stem, where it seals the valve against the bladder - The leak can be seen in the photo where the red part of the valve stem pokes through the bladder seam. br>br>I'm very disappointed because this pad worked perfectly until it began to leak. I even bought one for my wife's bike after I got mine, and when I contacted the store/seller about it, they suggested I do a leak test to see if I could patch it up, but there were no offers to replace it. I also attempted to contact the manufacturer via the Airhawk website, but received no response. I guess I'm on my own with this, so I'll try to fix it now that it's no longer useful. br>br>Edited on May 18, 2016: br>Service rating has been reduced from two to one because I attempted to repair the leak several times but was unsuccessful. The manufacturer has yet to respond. Unfortunately, this is the only design that seems to work well for me so far, so I'm stuck with their faulty product, and I ordered another to replace it, considering it a small price to pay for more comfortable biking. The new one they sent me looks like a repackaged return, slightly dirty, in a clear bag with no other original packaging or contents. This is the fourth Airhawk that I've purchased. two for others, and two for me now. I'm hoping that this replacement lasts as long as the previous one did, or at the very least long enough for me to find a more durable product.

It works fine until you have to brake, accelerate, or enter curves
3/5

On long straight rides, it's very comfortable and keeps the hotspots at bay. The design allows air to flow freely from one compartment to the next, ensuring that pressure is evenly distributed throughout your butt. This is fine if you're cruising down straight highways and only need to cover a few miles. The constant movement of air between the pockets, however, makes you feel very unsteady in your saddle during braking, acceleration, and twisties. When I'm not on the freeway, I take the pad off. To be honest, for a guy who rides an American v-twin, I ride pretty aggressively. twin. You won't be nearly as critical if you just toodle around.

For long journeys, this is a must-have! Straps that are frayed or worn out may need to be replaced
4/5

Then there's the bad: br>br>Halfway through a 2000-mile bike trip, I had this delivered to a friend's house. The elastic strap snapped during installation. I wasn't putting too much pressure on it; It split at the stitching on the strap with the smallest pull. It's an elastic strap that hasn't been cinched all the way. I was completely let down. Of course, my first impression of this product was that it was complete garbage. I'm thinking about getting a new one, but I had to re-tie the clasp because I was in the middle of something. The elastic strap stayed in place for the rest of the trip after the knot was tied. br>br>And now for the good news: br>br>So I could have gone the first 1000 miles without the seat pad, and I definitely could have gone the last 1000 miles without it, but I must say that once I found the sweet spot for the air pressure, that trip went a lot smoother. I don't have a lot of 'junk in my trunk,' so without the pad, I was forced to stop every 100 miles or so to deal with the saddle soreness. I was able to keep going down the road with the seat pad in place and adjusted to the right amount of pressure, stopping only for gas (about every 220 miles). With just a position change, I was able to keep moving on my bike, which has highway pegs. What an excellent short-term solution! I'm not sure how this compares to buying a touring saddle, but I must say that the ventilation was excellent, and the interconnected chambers meant that shifting the hips immediately relieved pressure on sore areas. It's good stuff, and I'd recommend it if you need something temporary, quick, or cheap. It's important to remember, as the reviews stated, that the seat works best when it's not completely inflated. One reviewer's life-saving advice was to "sit IN it, not ON it. " I'm giving it a three-star rating now that I've completed the 1000-mile road test. br>br>Side note: Good product with obvious QC issues. br>br> I have an 08 DL650 and wanted to share the following: This pad is about 1" wider than my seat, so I have some overhang on either side; this isn't a problem because it presses down to the sides of the seat when you sit on it; however, it does look odd sticking up off the side and not following the contour of the seat. If you want to keep your bike's lines as clean as possible, a small or DS version might be the way to go. In the end, I decided that the overhang was a better option than the existing saddle. The air would fill those chambers and provide a wider/softer base when I leaned back on my backpack and sat straight up. br>br>Update on the 5,000-mile run: It is a life saver. You will not be disappointed if you order it. I'm giving it a four-star rating now.
