I haven't noticed that with mine, and I'm using them outside; however, the color of mine has faded due to the sun.
It's all about being gentle. The plastic coating usually wears off after a short time, exposing the raw metal. Your metal hooks may cause damage to the cargo you're attempting to secure, or they may not fit around/through it. These will form a sturdy loop to which you can then attach your straps.
These straps have completely changed my life. I don't use them for 3,600-pound loads, but they are rated for that weight. In a collision, however, a load far lighter than 3,600 pounds could produce that much force. As a result, I would never use these for a static load of 3,600 pounds.

So far, I've purchased four sets (for a total of 24 ties). These straps have been used to secure motorcycles, bicycles, and crates in the past. They're looped on my L- track, E- S- and track Fittings and track mounts. When I needed to extend the dog leash, I added a couple more. When I go camping or travel by car, I use them with carabiners. In my cargo trailer conversion, I keep a dozen of these on hand. I have one on a RV door handle so that I can grab it in the wind when opening the door. To secure other objects to it, I wrap them around any size tube, pipe, tree, or nearly any object. For going around a larger object, I make a chain of several and attach it to the roof rack with straps. They're used as a 'chicken' strap for another strap that's about to wear out. I have one on the sides of a roof rack that I use to step up to access the rack from the back tire, and I use it on motorcycle and bike racks. If you own an RV, a motorcycle, a 4x4, a roof rack, a canoe, a kayak, a bike, or camping equipment. These are required if you have a cat, dog, or other pet. br>AND I make my own clothes and can't make these for the same price! They only require 1 yard of webbing - as well as sewing it - after which you will be able to sell it to you - with regard to shipping! For $1, you can get a tie. I don't know what else to call it if that isn't a steal. I've never been paid to review anything, and I've never been offered anything for free, but I do so because I keep buying more! I'm going to order my fifth set to put in my Honda Element (I already have four ratchet straps).
These strap loops can be used as tie downs or lanyards for heavy tools, and they're very useful to have on hand. Given that they're normally $6-$7, this is a great deal. br>br>Although these loops have an impressive 3600 lbs breaking strength, the working load limit is significantly less. br>br>I keep several of these strap loops on hand in the truck, home, and office. br>br> In most cases, it'll suffice, but I plan to use them to hoist equipment weighing more than 1200 pounds. My mobility scooter was hoisted into my car with the help of a lift. There are three pieces that must be lifted in total. The scooter itself isn't an issue because the lift manufacturer provides a fitting into which the lift hook fits. The scooter seat and battery, on the other hand, are a different issue. I can loop these straps around and not damage the covering because they are so soft. I grab two and wrap them around the seat, securing them with their other loop. I have some Ancras that I use for tie downs and they're great. However, there are times when I wish one was a little longer. Furthermore, some of the lower hooks in my truck's bed are flat metal, which will rip the rubber coating off my Ancras hooks. (The ones I had before were ripped to shreds!) ) This keeps the rubber in good shape, making it more usable and easier to work with. Things like a motorcycle, for example. When you can't get a hook in the exact spot you need it, these straps are ideal. I just placed another order. I prefer bright orange because it is more difficult to lose. Even so, I was unable to recover.
As a precaution, please be aware of the following: I ordered these ahead of the upcoming kayak season and have yet to use them. After I've used them a few times, I'll update this post. br>br>I examined them closely and found that they are well constructed and appear to be capable of withstanding the load / strain for which I intend to use them (tire downs for roof top kayak transport). I tried on a pair to make sure they were comfortable. The length is ideal for my needs because the attachment point inside my rear hatch is only a few inches long, leaving me with a 5" loop outside the hatch, plenty of room for a sheet bend knot to secure the to down for the back kayak ties.
We bought these straps to use in our new toy hauler to secure our motorcycles. The toy hauler and two expensive motorcycles would be severely damaged if the looped strap snapped. The straps also worked great for a porch project I recently finished. Before I could return to the project I started a month ago, the treated 4"x4"x12' post bowed and twisted badly. I couldn't slide the PVC post covers over the post because of the bows and twist, but I was able to straighten everything out with these straps, 5'x3/4" pipe clamps, rope, heavy duty ratchet straps, and a 1 ton dually. After that, I was able to use these straps on the new post covers to make additional adjustments without damaging them.
