Land Cruiser, model year 1997 We'd been chasing a 4 mpg loss for years, but it was still running fine and there was no check engine light on. It recently began idling at 1300 rpm and stayed there for a while before dropping to around 900 rpm. We looked at everything but couldn't find anything. This sensor was mentioned in a post on the internet. We unplugged it and received an error code right away, but the idle remained the same. When I plugged it back in, the code was gone. I bought it and installed it, and it idled at 1000 rpm for about 2 minutes before dropping to 800. Now that it's hot, I'm driving around at 650 rpm, and it's as smooth as silk. br>br>It appears that the sensor can fail and report to the engine that the temperature is below freezing even when the temperature is 200 degrees Fahrenheit without tripping the check engine light. When the computer detects that the mixture is freezing, it alters it. It was well worth the money.
Because the one that came off the other sensor must've fallen off, I didn't realize it needed a crush washer when I installed it. Because I didn't have the crush washer installed when I installed the new sensor, my vehicle was leaking a lot of coolant. I couldn't figure out why, so I turned to the internet for answers. I learned about the crush washer's importance. The leaking stopped after I went to the parts store and got the correct one! I believe the seller should emphasize how critical it is that they do not include that critical component, and that the buyer should be aware that it is required for a successful installation.
On removal and installation, it was a difficult spot to reach, but everything went smoothly. You'll need the copper washer, which isn't included in this kit, as others have mentioned. Ordering it overnight from my local dealer cost $2. I was getting P0116, and the live temperatures showed that it was below 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Installed a new sensor, and temperatures were returning to normal at idle.
The fit and function are perfect. It was recommended that the hose, thermostat, and waterpump be replaced after 100,000 miles. The engine computer uses this temperature sensor to properly meter fuel.
