That is an excellent query. The thermocoupler does nothing but send signals, as indicated by the gauge. Either F* or F would be displayed on the gauge. or C*. The VDO gauge is in F*. Although installing these senders is always a pain in the neck, and a complete lack of instructions didn't help, they worked perfectly with the gauge I installed.
