Questions & Answers

Is it possible to use a standard 9v smoke detector battery in this device?

Yes, a 9 volt battery from the store.

Is it possible to use this to determine the speed of a centrifuge by looking through the clear plastic cover to the tape? Approximately 4 inches to the tape at the most?

I'm not sure how it would work with the cover on. If you put it right up against the cover, I might be okay with it.

Is this appropriate for determining the RPMs of lawn mower blades?

Because the blade of a rotary lawn mower is driven directly off the main shaft of the motor, anything spinning at the same RPMs as the blade will also rotate at the same RPMs. There may be a place on a part of the shaft where you can attach the reflective tape; Then, while the motor is running, you point the meter at the tape's location; I don't recommend trying to attach to the blade! It would be too risky to measure that way! Just keep in mind the following guidelines: You could lose at least ONE thumb if you mess with a spinning lawn mower blade! Then you'd have to rely on your elbow to get around!
p. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding. Initially, I was oblivious to the email.

What do you do with the lawn mower engine's reflective tape?

On a push mower, place it on the flywheel or the debris screen on top of the engine; on newer models, the screen is usually covered or fixed and does not rotate.'

It comes with a case and is simple to use
5/5

There are a lot of test strips included, as well as a battery and a case. It is simple to work with. Your results are automatically saved in memory after testing, allowing you to review them later. Each new reading is stored ahead of the previous one, which I like. Details can be found in the video.

For the price, it's not bad
4/5

It's Chinese, to be sure. No, it's not the ideal tool for the job. However, for the price and for the job I needed it to do, it was ideal. Advantages: br>br> Low-cost, reasonably accurate, light-weight, and small enough to fit into tight spaces. Furthermore, the outcomes are repeatable. However, not in a row. Deal with it because it's a handheld device. Those who argue that the battery connector requires polarity markings should think again. There's only one way to connect a 9-volt battery. For those who claim that the tape does not adhere. Rust, oil, diesel fuel, mayonnaise, and butter are all resistant to it. It sticks just fine if you use grit paper or a file to get down to bare metal; by the way, even packing tape won't stick to the above surface contaminants. br>br>Contrary to popular belief, there are a number of disadvantages to using this product. The following are the only reasons I did not give this a five-star rating: 1) You'll have to fiddle with the battery connector to get the cover to slide on properly; 2) I had a couple of dim light events during my testing; and 3) Having to remove the battery after each use will almost certainly result in connector failure. br>br>Overall, this is a low-cost tool that accomplishes its goal. This is a hobbyist's guide, not a professional's guide. I would definitely recommend it for any one-time task or light garage use.

For accurate readings, it's critical to have contrast
4/5

I was hesitant to buy it because it was one of the more affordable items of its kind. But then I saw it in action on YOUTUBE in a "Project Farm" review, and it appeared to work quite well. I've only had it for a short time, which is why I gave it four stars. If you read the instructions carefully, you will notice that a high contrast between the background and the tape you use as a marker is required for accurate readings. Before applying the reflective tape as the "marker," a black tape should be wrapped around any shiny or glossy surface. This model, as well as the more expensive versions, operate on the same principle. The trigger for all of them is a reflective surface against a high contrast background. As you can see in the photo, it doesn't matter what color the "marker" is as long as there is enough contrast; red tape, like other colors, looks great against the black/dark background. The red tape was used because the tape that came with it didn't seem to stick to anything metallic very well. On any surface with insufficient contrast, I got erratic readings. One last point. There is no safeguard in place to prevent the 9V battery from being installed incorrectly. If you do, the product may be damaged. Make sure you look closely and insert the battery with the and -. in the proper orientation of the terminals So far, everything has gone smoothly. If it holds up, I'll give it a five-star rating. At a reasonable price, this is an excellent tool.

Works
5/5

But there's a catch. I had a bad experience with a high-frequency trader (HFT Cen- This one cost three times as much as the tech unit. The numbers were all over the place, so I gave it back. My hopes for this dirt-cheap unity were low, so the first thing I did when it arrived was go over ten of my rotating tools and put them to the test. I came across a 100rot consistency. Each tool from reputable manufacturers such as Makita, DeWalt, and Milwaukee has been rated below. I like how consistent it is, how easy it is to use, and how it comes with a 9V battery, which most people don't have on hand. It includes a nice blue pouch, instructions, warranty card, and reflective stripe, all of which are of higher quality and quantity than Cen- Tech. Expectations were exceeded, but only because they were set so low in the first place. It would be helpful to know who you got this from. If this unit has ever been made, please let me know if there is a way to calibrate it. Even if the readings MIGHT be off (or all cordless power tool manufacturers cheat on their numbers), I'll still give it five stars because it's so much better designed in terms of ergonomics than my comparable, it works, and it's consistent in its readings.

It appears to function correctly
3/5

In order to get a reading, the instructions neglect to mention that you must aim perpendicular to the surface (at the center of rotation). To get a stable reading, it appears that you must be within about 10 cm of the target at first; after that, you can back away a little more, but the claimed 20 cm seems a bit exaggerated. Never- the- When used as I describe, it provides stable and fairly accurate readings (my 3600 rpm grinder measured 3585 rpm, which is within 0. 4% ) Pretty good for the price. I have no information on the other ones.

It gets the job done
4/5

For the price, you can't go wrong with this; it's easy to use and appears to provide accurate results. It loses a star because of a flaw in its functionality that makes it a pain to use. Because the readings are based on the reflection of a piece of reflective tape placed on the rotating element, a reflective rotating element will cause issues. Because most shafts and other components are shiny, the reading may be affected. You can cover the shaft with black tape. Alternatively, keep the device completely still until the reading stabilizes. However, if you need to know what something's RPM is, this is a good deal.
