Why would you want to chop it up? This is a dust cover that also indicates whether or not all of the power for your lights is present. Is a useful troubleshooting tool that will not cause any harm.
It has a brass-like appearance but isn't magnetic. So I'm going to say it's brass.
Turning on your turn signals and braking will cause the lights to turn on. The fourth pin, which is always on, is for the running lights.

This was purchased for my 2017 Honda Ridgeline, but it does not fit tightly into the OEM 7 pin socket. The pins align and make contact, but the adapter is slid into the socket loosely. And the retention mechanism isn't going to work. With just a little pressure, the adapter will pop out. Owners of both the Honda Ridgeline and the Honda Pilot are reporting the same issue, according to the internet. If you own one of these vehicles, I would recommend that you look for something else.
It's nice to know how the plug works before you hook up the trailer because you won't have to guess what's wrong.
This is what I use to connect incandescent (not LED) trailer lights. This is an excellent choice. It works fine, and I like that we have test lights to ensure the adapter is in good working order.
Great product with easy-to-pull-out grips that make detaching a breeze.
This is something I make use of. This does exactly what it says on the tin. This is what I used to make my 2016 Nissan Frontier 7 blade compatible with my small trailer.
If you need a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter for your trailer, this is the one to get. Nobody sold an adapter for my VW Atlas, which came with the 7 pin (round) connector. This was a lot less expensive than the part that VW had forgotten to give me.
For the past two years, it has performed admirably on my Honda Pilot.
If the need arises, I would purchase again.
