The right side (as seen from the back) is 816. The number 815 refers to the side on which you are standing.
No, the wiring connections would be visible, and the housing cavity would be unprotected. If you're putting it on a boat trailer to launch down a ramp, I've heard of people simply unplugging the connection to their vehicle before lowering it into the water to prevent it from shorting out, and then letting it drain and dry before reconnecting.
My trailer is equipped with LED lights, whereas the one I ordered was equipped with bulbs. I just replaced the lenses because my lights were still working.

It was simple to put in place.
I ordered the wrong one, but I couldn't tell because it had led lights instead of a bulb, and I couldn't tell because I couldn't tell on the website. However, since I only required the lenses, it worked out.
The fit and function are perfect. I looked up the model numbers and went ahead and bought them. It was a simple installation that only necessitated the acquisition of a few inexpensive electric connectors.
