It measures 3/4 inches There is a lot of weight on it.

Is there an alternative to bolting this to the plate? What if it were welded?

In short, yes. Mine is welded to a square tube measuring 2" x 2".

I consider these to be well worth the purchase price. It is possible to bolt them onto a structure or simply weld them on as desired. I do not see any advertising for their open retention feature. In this case, the rod is 3/4" long and the plate is 7/32" thick, so it is almost 1/4" I like this stuff way better than anything you can find in a store.
