If you mark it accurately, there will only be a couple of slots about 1/4" wide.
The winch on my 2018 Wrangler starts 3" above the frame rails and ends about 1" above the factory bumper.
I'm not sure about the 17, but the bracket that holds it on the 2018 must be removed, and the bracket that holds it on is a welded-on bracket that must be removed unless you refabricate their bracket, which I did.
It is not necessary to drill. I put a 9500 pound load on the truck. Winch built by Smitty

The vacuum pump needed to be relocated, but the product description didn't specify that the mounting bracket needed to be removed (cut off). It also makes no mention of the additional relocation kit that is required. "Fits" denotes that no major alterations are required for assembly and installation. Any definition of "fits" does not include having to grind a bracket off in order to install it. If you need to make it "fit," it simply does not exist!.
The quality and finish of this product are excellent for the price, shipping was quick, and all hardware was included; however, it would not fit my 2018 JK due to a welded-on container and bracket that would have to be removed. Because I have tools and experience with met fab, I was able to make it work by modifying the bracket that came with it. Knowing this, I'd buy it again, but not everyone is capable of mods. With my 12000 winch, I have no reservations about the mount's integrity. Three stars are appropriate for a 2018 Jeep.
The pictures show a large three-hole mounting bracket for the winch plate; however, what was delivered was a very small two-hole mounting bracket that was NOT GOING TO TAKE ANY LOAD, JUNK.
I am very pleased with my purchase of this product.
WARNING! This plate will not fit on a JK unless the vacuum pump mounting bracket is removed and the pump is relocated. Save your money unless you want to get hit with 50% restocking fee if you want to get hit with 50% restocking fee if you want to get hit with 50% restocking fee%.
The first time I tried to apply pressure to the winch plate, it didn't work. A standard 12,000-pound winch causes it to fail. It's great if you're just going to use it as a display lol.
The plate is sturdy enough, but the bracket is too thin and bent after only a few uses.
This is not the case. For the winch plate, there are only two mounting holes. We'll see how well it holds up in the long run.
