Questions & Answers

Is it necessary to attach it to the door with screws? Is it possible to simply hang it over the door and remove it?

If you plan to keep it removable, the ladder will not be very safe to use. br>Do you intend to wear it only when you need it? Afterwards, remove it? If that's the case, I suppose you could do it, but I wouldn't because it might move on you. br>You can't just put it on the door and forget about it. br>Drive down a road that has a hazard.br>If you did, the cops would stop you. I'm going to tell you to get down from the ladder. If you're going to screw it to the door, I'd recommend doing a dry fit first to make sure it's in the right place. br>Screwing to the van door isn't a big deal; you can always take it off later.

Is this compatible with my 2019 Chevrolet Express?

The 103HF is for the Ford van; the 103H is required for the rest of the vehicles.

Is this going to fit my 1997 Ford Aerostar?

This ladder is designed for a standard van and will not fit in the Areostar.

For my application, I got a lot of bang for my buck
4/5

I looked at some $500 ladders, and while I'm sure they're great, this ladder was perfect for me and my rarely used van. I couldn't stand the silver, so I gave him a few coats of rattle can black and he was good to go. With my future plans for a spare tire carrier and Jerry cans in the back, I discovered that the van's side aft of the driver door worked well as a mounting point. To get it going, I had to make some of my own oddly shaped washers, but it's sturdy and attractive.

I read a lot of reviews about this ladder being flimsy and not fitting correctly before buying it, but I bought it anyway because it was an excellent value for an Econoline specific Aluminum ladder with no issues

I got it for $99 before it went up in price. It's made of aluminum, but it's surprisingly strong for the material. If you require a stainless steel version, please contact us. It costs more than twice as much, and if you're hanging it from a back door, you might want to reconsider how much weight you're putting on the hinges. If you're in the low 200s and take care, this ladder will last you a long time, and the fitment is standard. br>br>Many people complained about having to bend the top of the back door due to incorrect angles. It turns out that this isn't a problem that can't be solved in less than ten minutes. The leader is made of aluminum tubing, but the handers at the top are made of steel. A steel bolt screws into a "star nut" driven up inside the tube to secure these modifications. Ibr>A. advice and recommendations - Give yourself plenty of time to plan and execute your strategy

My '96 E350 pass van now has a Ford-specific model ladder. br>I'm very pleased with it and wanted to write a review because there are some helpful hints to pass on. br>br>This ladder is surprisingly light weight, which is great for not adding weight to the vehicle, but strong when mounted: Except for the top metal hooks, it's all gleaming aluminum. br>br> br>br>However, I believe the ideal weight limit is somewhere between 250 and 300 pounds. 300lbs. I'm 150 pounds, and I believe a 300-pound person bouncing on it hard could bend it in use or bend indent the sheet of the van on which the bottom leg pads rest. If you're a big guy who'll be using the ladder a lot, go with a heavier stainless steel model or a different brand with bigger bottom surface pads. br>I added a label to keep people over 200 pounds off Lolbr>br>The ladder does not come with instructions (read on for my tips), but it does come with 10 screws (4 for each bottom leg pad and 1 for each top hook) and is fully assembled. br>br>You'll probably notice that the top tube legs aren't at the ideal angle when hooked on the top edge, and that they should be bent up a little more. The leg hooks flex the top edge of the door out a little as a result of this not-so-ideal bend, and the lower pad part of the hook exerts undue force on the van sheet metal, possibly indenting it. br>If you place an anti-scratch material under the hook, this bad angle effect is amplified. pads- and it is something I strongly advise you to do. If this occurs, others have suggested using a pipe bending tool (such as a conduit bender or slide on spring pipe benders) to bend up some of the pipe. br>On top of that, there's a pad. To install a spring pipe bender, unscrew the hooks with a Philips driver. Mark the pipe and pad hooks with a marker so that you can screw them back on in the same horizontal position. If you don't use a pipe bender, you might not be able to bend it or it might collapse. It wasn't something I wanted to take a chance on. br>br>I strongly advise cutting some slightly wider thin plastic, vinyl, or rubber sheeting from something old for spacers to install between the pads and hooks top and bottom, otherwise the hooks and pads will scratch the paint down to bare metal, causing rust. br>br>I had some plastic that was thicker than sheet metal- I took some thick sheeting spacers and cut them to size with some sheet metal cutters; I made the top pad hooks extra long and then bent the plastic to fit into the hook lip with a heat gun. br>In the plastic sheet, I drilled matching holes. To prevent future hole edge rusting and leaks, caulk or glue the screw threads before installing the final screws. br>I unscrewed the hook's screw and re-screwed it with the plastic underneath the screw. br>br>Installation: br>br>Installation: br>br>Installation: I decided to put the ladder on the back door of the driver's side. Because the steps do not obstruct my view in the rearview mirror, and I will not be hanging anything from the ladder that will obstruct my view, I believe the door should always be closed when using the ladder for stability and to avoid damaging the door hinges, and this allows the pass side door to be open while the driver's door is shut, making moving items from the roof to the inside of the vehicle and vice versa possible. br>I centered the ladder over the center window rivet and fully opened the door with the door limit arm removed to ensure that the ladder did not make contact with the fender tail light. br>br>While playing around with the ladder testing, use masking tape to protect the pads' surfaces from scratching the paint. Mount-br>br>Mount-br>Mount-br>Mount-br>Moun The top hooks must be screwed first. br>Because the hooks clearance is limited to the roof, you'll need to use a hammer to make sure they're all the way down onto the door edge. br>br>You must punch and drill screw holes in the center of the board. br>Begin with a small, sharp bit and drill slowly, while wearing eye protection. Finish with a larger but that is slightly smaller than the screw's center non threaded shank so that the screw requires some effort to start in the hole and fits correctly. br>Place one screw in the hole to ensure you're using the correct final bit size. br>br>Be sure to mark and drill without the spacers in place when installing the bottom pads screws, or you'll be fighting them, and make sure to mount the pads perfectly horizontal to the door so the installation doesn't look unprofessional. br>br>The top hooks are useful because if someone tried to steal the ladder by unscrewing it, the door would have to be unlocked in order for the top to lift off. br>br>I wish you the best of luck.

It Isn't Heavy Duty, But It Gets the Job Done
4/5

I was surprised, like the other reviewers, that the ladder supports had to be bent. According to the manufacturer, this is supposed to be "Ford specific. " It was, however, rock solid once it was fastened to my 1995 Ford E350 van. The idea of putting some pads under the attachment spots, as suggested by reviewer Barnaby, is a good one. That is something I will take care of. br>br>It'll suffice for our occasional trips to the van's roof, but it's not a professional-grade item. I looked at an Aluminess [Santee, CA Manufacturer of custom racks and accessories] ladder and decided that we didn't need a $370 ladder for our needs! This one does the job well and is reasonably priced. br>br>UPDATE, APRIL 2017br>The ladder had been working perfectly for years. I traded in my 1995 E350 with the ladder for a 2007 E350. From the old van to the new one, we moved the massive custom roof rack. I knew where I could get a ladder, too! Even though it isn't heavy duty, this is adequate for monthly use. I didn't add any padding to the attachment points, by the way. Six screws are included in the ladder. I used an 1/8" bit to pre-drill the holes, then "Shoe Goo" [silicone or- ] to aid in the sealing of the screws while they were being installed. USE A NON-ADHESIVE ADHESIVE ADHESIVE. br> ON THE BUMPER, SKID STRIP- Otherwise, that final step might be a pain!.

QUALITY CONTROL IS POOR
3/5

QUALITY CONTROL IS AWFUL: br>br>1) If you don't change the angle of the top hooks and use clear paint guard tape, your vehicle's paint will be damaged. br>2) The steps aren't even in a straight line. I contacted SURCO, and they said the fit was "generic" for the Ford Vans. br>br>I contacted SURCO, and they said the fit was "generic" for the Ford Vans. Since 1992, however, the E Series has remained unchanged. They also stated that their design would not change. I suppose they're catering to the Pre-K crowd. Versions dating back to 1992 br>br>The only reason I didn't return it was that I had already drilled holes and installed it in my van. Yes, the ladder works (which is why I gave it two stars), but the quality and customer service are both lacking.
