YES . The extender is included in the package. I didn't use it because I thought it would reduce the rear view with the 35" tire and third brake light. The tire carrier does its job admirably. There are no complaints. JK Sport 2 DR was released in 2012. With a 4" lift, the height can be increased to 35".
This carrier will accept aftermarket jk ones.
Yes, I installed it in about two hours by myself, but I have 40 years of automotive repair experience, including 12 years on Jeeps. BEFORE removing the stock hinge bolts, follow the instructions for "taping" your tailgate in place (properly positioned in height and latched). This allows for near-perfect alignment of the Smittybilt hinge bracket, so you'll only have to insert and tighten those outside edge bolts to lock it in enough to open and snug down the rest; additionally, by loosening those six hinge bolts and using a wooden shim underneath, you can achieve better closure alignment (centering the height of the latch) for years of trouble-free tailgate closure. I hope this information is useful.
The tilting of the mount is not possible. It's a fantastic mount, and I adore mine.

5 r18. My son and I completed the installation in about 2 hours. There are a plethora of YouTube videos available to assist with the lack of instructions. As with any DIY project, suggest that people look it over before they start. br>br>The Smittybilt is the only tire carrier on the market with a third brake light, and it's the best deal at $369. Our 35" tailgate was constantly rattling, and two - We take the Jeep off-road after months of no squeaks. a significant amount of time on the road br>br>I read a few reviews where people complained about the carrier not swinging out with a 35" tire or not allowing the glass to open. This is not true. Then, perhaps, we made a mistake because it works perfectly. br>br>We used the 35"'s second highest setting, and the brake light was nice and clear.
There's a lot of weight on this thing, and it bangs around a lot. I decided on the smittybilt carrier after what seemed like an eternity of reading reviews and watching YouTube videos. I'm so glad I took the chance. This beast is a MONSTER! The hinges have a nice feel to them and are not at all loose. Overall, the build quality and tolerances were excellent, and I was able to position the tire as far back and as low/high as I required. I really like it. br>br>There are a couple of points worth mentioning that, in my opinion, do not warrant the removal of a star.
1. The instructions are a complete waste of time. The pictures are terrible, and some parts are simply not mentioned, despite the fact that the book is reasonably comprehensive. On the complete install, there are a couple of excellent YouTube videos.
2. Depending on the size of the bit you use, reinstalling the stock 6 far right hinge bolts can be difficult. Because these are small spaces, be careful not to strip them.
3. Depending on how high or low you set the light, switching to a third brake light can be simple or require some modification. I had to trim some of the stock plastic to fit the light bracket because it was just barely over the top of the tire. It isn't a significant issue.
4. I noticed, like many others before me, that there was bare primer/metal and some rust behind my stock hinges, which I will need to address in the spring. br>br>I REALLY LIKE THIS TIRE CARRIER!.
I like the concept as well as the meatiness. Because the hinge is so stiff, it would not open far enough to allow access for installation, I ruined the star bolts. My car is still parked on the garage floor, and the door is still shut. Until I get new bolts, I won't be able to use the Jeep. br>br>Recent changes: br>br> The SRC Gen2 front bumper, matching rear bumper, side armor, HD Pivot Spare tire carrier, and Smittybilt 9500 winch took two days to install; the tire carrier, which I thought would take an hour, took two days. On the fender side of the hinge, the hinge does not open far enough to allow access to all of the Torx bolts. To redo the nuts on the nut plate and install new, longer bolts, I needed to purchase a metric tap and die. The hinge does not swing out far enough to allow the tailgate rear window to open once it is installed on the carrier's accommodation for the largest tire (mine is a 35 on stock rims). To make room, I bought a wheel spacer. There are some parts that aren't used and others that aren't mentioned in the instructions.
For the past three months, I've had this installed on my Jeep. There are no issues. The tailgate opens and closes effortlessly, without the need to lift the gate. The hinges have a substantial weight to them. Everything is of excellent quality. br> From October to February, they salt the roads in my part of the country because we get rain, snow, and ice. There was no bubbling or flaking in the finish, which was a plus.
The instructions are a little lacking, as many online forums and blogs have pointed out. If you watch just about any video on the internet, you'll notice that it's actually quite simple to set up. The most difficult part, which isn't difficult at all, just a pain, is aligning the parts so that the tire clears the bumper without being too high and the center brake light is at the proper height. The fact that this carrier is so adaptable is one of its best features. It's SOLID once it's put in place! The tailgate is easy to open and close. I haven't bought or installed it yet, but there is an add-on accessory for this carrier that allows you to mount a high-resolution camera. raise the jack. The jack mount is attached to the tire carrier via mounting holes. br>br>Excellent customer service. Instead of hammering the studs into the bracket with one ball peen hitting another, I tried to pull the stud through with an impact wrench (Don't do it!). It was taken apart. After taking advantage of the situation to politely inform me that I had made a mistake. Customer service replaced the parts free of charge, which I was aware of. I fully expected to be charged and would have paid, so Smittybilt Customer Service deserves credit.
You should expect to have a good time. This carrier is perfect in every way. It's tough and well-made (despite the fact that it's made in China). Those instructions, on the other hand, are terrible. To be honest, they're about three steps above suck. Advice: There's a YouTube video on how to put this thing together. I made two very important points, one of which I addressed and the other of which I did not. Make sure there is some pressure under the tailgate by putting some wood under it. This secures the tailgate and saves you a lot of aggravation. Tape the gate in place anywhere there is tape. Don't try to save money in any way. Next, find the distance between the studs in the old spare mount and the ground. This will save you time and aggravation during disassembly and adjustment (ask me how I know). The color picture on the outside of the box provides the best instruction with the mount. That's worth more than the entire instruction manual. Could they use any worse pictures, and the steps are missing important details? They refer to bracket and bolt part numbers, but the components are not labeled. So the first step is to practice assembly with an adult beverage of your choice, which I didn't do and which would have saved me hours, but it's not on and it's exactly what I wanted, looks good, and will last. And the tale of how one elderly gentleman reinstalled the 20" wheel with 35" tires on the mount will have to wait for another day.
