There are 8 straps/buckles that can be used to strap it to bars. I have used it on a van, SUV, and car, all with no issues. It is larger, so I wouldn't use it on a compact car or economy
It is not a good idea in my opinion. There isn't enough material on the straps to allow them to go through the doors and connect. The process would be a major hassle even if you got it to work.

purchased this to take with us on family trips, thinking we could fit one suitcase in it. Well, it's much bigger than I thought it would be. We were able to fit all four suitcases inside!
