Questions & Answers

Is there a 2 inch receiver included with this?

Yes, the cargo carrier includes a built-in 2 inch receiver. Because it's a straight receiver (not angled up), make sure your exhaust is clear before using it. To keep the heat away from your cargo, you may need to add a turned exhaust tip. We are very happy with this cargo carrier; it is well-made and easy to assemble.

How far does the pin hole from the tray go? ie. From the basket to the pin hole, how long does the insert extend?

It's possible that the spare tire on the back of your car isn't long enough to fit into the hitch receiver. In my case, the carrier's ability to reach the hitch receiver was hampered by a Jeep Wrangler 2015 spare tire. It got close, but not far enough to insert the pin.

How big is it on the inside?

The answer is 47, according to ad data. 25 X 20. 25 X 6

Is there a plastic locking cargo box that can be purchased for this? I was just curious if it would work because the bottom is so open. ?

I bought two truck mud flaps and cut them to fit the carrier's bottom, after which I strapped a locking plastic box to it. I had no problems driving from Alaska to Ohio and back. The box was still dirty, but then again, so was everything else!

You're assembling it incorrectly (as shown in the photos)
4/5

Today, I received the carrier and put it together in about an hour. There is a lack of detail in the instructions. Particularly in terms of nut/bolt orientation and support placement. This is exacerbated by the fact that all of the photos I found online appear to show the carrier being assembled incorrectly. It took me an hour because I remounted the vertical supports on the inside, which is much better than the pictures I found here. With the exception of Bao's assessment, Except for the center supports, he appeared to have put it together correctly. br>br>Several users describe how they were forced to file the rough draft. pieces that have been cut You don't have to because none of the rough edges are exposed when they're put together the way they should be. Nothing was required of me to be filed. To see what I'm talking about, look at the photos attached. Now for my thoughts on the carrier. br>br> As expected, aluminum is a soft material, and overtightening the hitch mount bolts will cause it to deform. However, its overall structure appears to be quite solid, and it is, as expected, extremely light. Because the hitch mount lacks a tightener or other dampening mechanism, it does rattle when mounted, as others have noted. br>br>I'll be using it over the weekend and will update the review if I run into any issues.

For the price, it's a good buy, but don't be fooled by the 500-pound capacity claim
4/5

This is a great product. Make it easier on yourself by mounting all of the supports on the inside and only the screw heads on the outside; it'll look cleaner and won't snag clothing if you get too close. The side rails are very useful for securing your load, but don't expect to ratchet down a 500-pound load there. They're only there to keep things contained. They're far too flimsy for much more, not to mention putting too much strain on the plastic corners that hold it all together. It's a solid light-duty carrier, but it'll never be able to support or secure the claimed 500 pounds. capacity. The true useful capacity is closer to 100-fold. br>br> I weighed 200 pounds, which was significantly more than I required. The extruded aluminum "floor" beams won't hold much that isn't already supported by the center steel support, which will bear the brunt of the weight. Install a 3/4" plywood floor or buy an all-steel unit if you need an unbalanced heavy load. Because it's such a light item, adding a real floor has no negative consequences. Otherwise, save it for camping, coolers, the occasional Home Depot rental sander or posthole digger, and so on; don't expect to move a 500-pound tool, toy, or appliance with it. br>br>This should only be used for recreational or light purposes. It's excellent for that purpose, and I strongly suggest it. Finally, the receiver mount is quite long, which may be acceptable if you have a heavy-duty receiver that doesn't mind the leveraged tongue weight, or if you need to access a tailgate or rear swinging door, or if you need to clear a spare tire; however, my car is a hatchback without one. I cut 4. 5 inches removed and re-installed For a much better fit, I drilled the receiver pin holes. br>br>Overall, I'll get a lot of use out of this item if I use it with support straps to take the weight off my Class 1 light duty hitch. The price, weight, containment rails, appearance, and size are ideal for my Chevrolet compact car (2013 Volt), particularly when using support straps to distribute weight to the car body and a shortened receiver connection to reduce leverage.

It works, but the design has caused problems
3/5

It works, but the design and materials are a little lacking. After a single road trip, the one plastic corner that sits directly in front of our car's exhaust has melted away. I'm not sure if this is an issue that affects all vehicles, but it's worth mentioning.

Our camping trip went off without a hitch
5/5

It took an hour for me to put it together. It didn't come with clear instructions on how to put it together. Although I admit that this should be simple to put together, I think it would be better if it came with a better picture or assembly instructions. In any case, it only took an hour to put together and be ready to go camping with the boyscouts in Pico Blanco; the unit was sturdy and well-built. It was able to withstand the harsh environment of the mountains. It appeals to me. I'm thinking about modifying this cargo carrier to fit our bikes on it. I chose this unit over others because it weighs half as much (only 30 lbs). BTW, make sure your hitch is as high off the ground as you want it to be; this unit lacks a bent angle that would allow it to rise a few inches above the ground if compared to another model. This is possibly the only criticism I have for this product. I lucked out and borrowed a hitch riser from a friend for our camping trip. It will only be about 8" off the ground otherwise. After the riser, there are some pictures.

Maxxhaul 70108 cargo carrier with hitch mount
5/5

The Maxxhaul 70108 hitch mount cargo carrier was just delivered to me. I had seen an identical carrier at Harbor Freight and decided to get this one shipped to my door for $10 less. It arrived in three days, with all of the packaging intact. After reading all of the reviews, I spent about 15 minutes with a flat file smoothing out the edges and corners, but the pieces were in excellent condition. A little work was required on the two large label plates. The most important aspect of assembly is to wait until the very last minute to fully tighten anything. The hole alignment isn't perfect, but if you run all of the nuts and bolts in about 2/3 of the way, everything will fit perfectly. Also, keep in mind that one side of the small vertical supports has a pattern that faces out. It's simple to screw one up in the wrong direction. It's not a structural issue; it's just a matter of taste. There is some play in the carrier once it is installed in the hitch receiver, which will result in a bothersome rattle on the road. I bought a StowAway Cargo Carriers Hitch Tightener, which should take care of the problem. We're about to embark on a 1,100-mile road trip. If there are any problems, I will update my review.
