As far as I can tell, you are not missing anything, I also have the same one and I would think there should be a cover over the wires.

Putting the light on my 2014 Jeep was easy. The fact that it was mounted on the tail gate and not a swing-away tire carrier is a big plus. I didn't need to extend any wires for that reason, they provide the connectors, but I decided to go one step further and soldered the wires and used shrink wrap to assemble the product. It took 10 minutes for the installation to be completed. There is plenty of light in the room.

It was super simple to install and took me longer to take the old one out than it took Wires or no wires, it still works. It has a nice, bright appearance and is strong and sturdy.
The wobble would have earned it five stars, but it is so bad that it could have been given six. My plan is to weld several gussets on it so it will be stiffer. With a little modification, this led light works great. A lot of the steel has exposed bolts facing the glass, so it's flimsy. As a $2 fix I could have assumed that for this price that it would address an issue like this. Now I have rubber feet on the bolts and am no longer worried about the tailgate closing hard. Generally, I find it to be pretty good and it serves the purpose it was intended for. If I were to buy it again, I would.
The quality is excellent. I have a 31" spare that fits nicely in this.
