I do not see this as a problem. This odor is probably the result of dirt mixed with the oil of the product. Unless the trim was specifically washed, although it might be fairly clean after a basic overall wipe-down, there will still be some embedded dirt. My guess is that if you do that a couple of times, you won't get the black wipe off.
Using a coating on the trim will leave it with a factory matte finish, while using black on black will leave an incredibly glossy finish.

Update, 4/11/20 Although I still think this is a great product, I have noticed that the black plastic I have used it on is beginning to fade. When I tried the product again, the result was the same. Chemical Guys stuff is always good, but this one was particularly confusing. I might have just received a faulty product, but this product has a highly aerosolized quality to the point where it floats in the air even if there is no A significant amount of it dissipates or evaporates in the air before it reaches the plastic!
