Questions & Answers
Silicone usually smells like vinegar, however it is a non-corrosive material. If the smell bothers you, you can use 3M marine adhesive 5200 in white. Just make sure it is only used where you want it because rubber like is incredibly tough when dry. Whenever we have a problem on our boats, we use it.
Thanks for getting in touch, You have a great question. Thanks for asking. If the 3M 08663 Clear Super Silicone Seal is uncured, you can use the 3M 08984 General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner to clean it up. The used material can be mechanically removed with a knife, razor blades, piano wires, or sanding devices.
There is an 18-month shelf life on the 3M Black Super Silicone Seal, 08662.
I think it would be okay from the standpoint of safety. Since silicone is generally either safe or nonreactive (when dry), it does not pose health risks. In this case, I would feel comfortable using it as long as it is not directly near the water you are drinking (instead of just making occasional contact). This is important It's up to you to determine what your tolerance is for risk. A potable water solution might employ this stuff (except maybe for attaching a pump to it) in an efficacy sense, but I'm not sure it'd be useful. This stuff dries to an extremely rigid bead as soon as it's applied, so don't forget that when it's liquid, it dries to a liquid when it's applied. Having used it for some time, I've noticed that it tends to delaminate quite easily from surfaces. It will not tolerate even the slightest movement between substances, so will not allow it to form a film. Temperature changes over time. And contraction and expansion are part of that. A leak will eventually occur and the seal will eventually fail when tiny invisible cracks begin to form on it. It used to be something I loved in my early 20's, but over time my enthusiasm for this stuff has waned considerably. I keep a tube in my "bag of tricks", but no longer reach for it without thinking long and hard about application. Here's what I hope will help.

I used this to mount items on a shadow box with no issues - it worked exactly like I expected it to. I am particularly fond of some bulkier & more robust looking ones The items we are touching are heavy! My search for what I was after was rewarded. I let all items sit flat in the box on the counter for at least an hour to cure completely. "Dries" in about 20 minutes or so however, I let all items cure for just over an hour.
As of yet, I am doing well. On a Honda Element, I used this to repair a windshield whistle.
However, it was easy to apply and cleanup once it was used. For sealing 1997 D90 Defender, I used it. However, we have not used it in the rain yet. However, it was easy to apply and cleanup once it was used.
Only 10% of the contents could be used before the cap split, and I had to dispose of it.
It was perfect.
Application that is well done.
The best glue you've ever used.
