Anyone who does whittling or woodcarving knows that, despite the razor-sharp edges, it's difficult to get a good result. Sharp knives and frequent honing, as well as stop cuts and push cuts in even soft basswood, take their toll on the pushing thumb that rides the blade's spine; this simple, reasonably inexpensive, and utilitarian leather thumb guard aims to absorb a large portion of that cumulative abuse. It's simple to put on, comfortable to wear, and should accommodate most thumbs. It's also more substantial than the thin leather, fabric, and elastic thumb protectors available at sewing and hobby shops. Consider it a reusable, easy-on, easy-off replacement for multiple wrappings of popular green cloth tape. It's made in China and comes with a story card in a small cotton drawstring pouch with an attractive leather square (with the company's logo and name) stitched on it, then polybagged. It appears to be well-made for what it is: a single piece of 2 mm thick unsanded/tanned leather that has been cut to shape, folded over, and stitched with the tanned side out. I'm not sure if the stitched edges were also glued. br>br>As for how long it lasts, common sense dictates that the technique of the individual woodcarver, the species of wood used, whether carving with or against the grain, and the condition of the blades' edges all play a role in wear and tear. Leather also dries out and cracks if not nourished on a regular basis, so a little saddle soap will keep it supple and help it last longer.
The leather is dyed yellow, which stains your fingers and, more importantly, the wood you're carving. The thumb ring sizing splits weaken the leather and are illogical. A single split running from the tip of the thumb to the tip of the index finger would be preferable. The storage pouch is useless, but the square of leather embossed with their logo can be cut off and stuffed inside the thumb pouch to provide additional protection. The leather, on the other hand, does not have the same feel as vegetable-tanned leather and is unlikely to offer any protection against sharp tools.
Despite the fact that this is a fantastic product concept, this version did not impress me. It was bulky, and it was extremely tight around my thumb. Because there is only one size, you will receive what you see. This is fine for people who have smaller thumbs, but not for me. Due to its bulky nature, it is difficult to use as directed/needed. It is fancy and comes in a nice cloth bag to protect it, but it does not allow for smaller and more accurate carving because you can't get close enough to the material with this guard. It is fancy and comes in a nice cloth bag to protect it, but it simply does not work as I had hoped.
During Covid, we took an online woodworking course, and I'm really getting into it. I have a hitchhiker's thumb, which makes keeping the blade away from my thumb extremely difficult. This has proven to be extremely beneficial to me. Fear was the source of much of my hesitancy, but I'm no longer concerned! It smells wonderful, fits perfectly, and eventually molds to the shape of your hand. Thank you very much.
When stirring thick foods with a metal spoon, this provides excellent protection for a bruised thumb.
This was purchased as a Christmas present. Leather that is very strong and long-lasting. The seams are nicely finished. It's a little stiff at first, but it eventually molds to your thumb. This is preferred by the user over Woodcraft's flimsy alternatives.
Although the leather and stitching are of good quality, it is extremely tight on the thumb, causing blisters. However, it does provide adequate protection against knife cuts.
Though bulky, it protects your thumb after extensive carving over a long period of time. Any active woodcarver who uses a knife should have one of these.
